Softball Sweeps Franciscan

HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Hilbert College softball team picked up their first AMCC sweep today after they claimed a 6-0 and a 10-1 victory over Franciscan University.

The Hawks also celebrated the senior class of Jaelyn Gotham, Crystal Hailey, Wyann Jackson and Shenique Nibbs prior to the first pitch.

Hilbert collected seven hits in the first game led by Wyann Jackson, who finished with a pair and scored her run head-first into home plate.  Morgan McNeill and Morgan Grosch each were credited with a pair of stolen bases.

Gotham pitched a complete game giving up just three hits with one walk and one strike out.  She assisted on seven outs thrown to 1st base keeping the ball in front of her off the Baron's bats.

The Hawks added six more hits in the night cap, but tackled together 10-runs in the first three innings.

Jenna Castricone and Alexandria Wankel picked up a pair of hits and RBIs and Grosch scored three runs.  Castricone collected two stolen bases.

Rachel Allen also went the distance, but tossed two fewer innings with the Hawks winning in the fifth.  Allen finished with 10 strike outs (nine swinging) while giving up three hits against 19 batters.

*******

In the opening game, Hilbert got three on base at the bottom of the 2nd.  Back-to-back errors and a field's choice set Jackson up to do some damage.  Her ground out to second scored Anndrea Quiroga as the only run in the inning.

The following inning, Grosch (walk) and McNeill (single) got on base only to move around before they each stole home.  Within their time on the bags, Grosch moved to second with McNeill's hit then stole third.  With now two outs in the board, Grosch stole home - not long after, McNeill followed her.  Amanda Hucksoll earned first via a walk which forced a pitching change.  Hucksoll was thrown out at second on a stolen-base attempt.

After a pair of fly-outs to center field, Hilbert put together three straight hits down the left side of the field; Jackson to 3rd base, Wankel down the line, and Grosch through the left side.  Jackson used her speed to sprint home for the fourth run of the day.  With bases loaded, Wankel scored off a walk before the inning ended.

Crystal Hailey's single RBI in the 5th put the finishing touches on the board as Hilbert played through to top of the 7th for the win.

At the end of the day, a two hit, three run, first inning helped Hilbert jump out of the gate fast in the night cap.

Castricone's stolen second base distracted the catcher and allowed Morgan Grosch time to steal home for the opening run.  Another steal by Hilbert and a bad catch by Franciscan led to an extra base for Anndrea Quiroga and Castricone (run).  Then Wankel's hit to center field scored Quiroga for the three 1st inning runs.

Hilbert earned one hit but benefited from three Franciscan errors to post five runs in the bottom of the third.  Four Hawks reached first off a field's choice, one walked and Wankel whacked a triple as the only RBI of the inning.

One inning later, Castricone poked an RBI double to left center and her pinch runner, Brittany Cooley scored on a wild pitch to post 10 runs.

Allen struck six straight batters out swinging, beginning with the final out of the 1st inning and wrapping around to the second batter in the 3rd.  She gave up her first hit on that next batter before she got the next batter out looking.

The Hawks (6-21, 2-12) are scheduled to host Alfred University Monday, April 25 and then D'Youville College April 27.  Both double headers are set for 3pm start time.
