Softball Sweeps Greensburg, Ties Program's All Time Win Record

GREENSBURG, Pa.  – For the first time since the 2005 season, the Hilbert College softball team swept Pitt-Greensburg in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference action this afternoon.  The Hawks (12-11) outlasted the Bobcats winning both games by one run.

In the opening game, Hilbert built a 5-run lead heading into the bottom of the 7th and held on for the 12-11 win and then scored all three of their runs in the night cap by the 5th inning as they inked out the 3-2 series sweep.

Jenna Castricone went 4-for-8 with 3RBIs on the day.  Melanie Basile was impressing in the opening game going 4-for-4 while Maia Delaney went 3-for-4 in the night cap.

GAME ONE

Rachel Allen improved to 7-6 as her Hawks hit their way to victory.  She struck out six, gave up 16 hits and 10 earned runs.

Hilbert took a 10-0 lead into the bottom of the third inning and didn't score again until the top of the 7th when they added two more runs on the score board.

Greensburg came alive as the game progressed, slowly crawling back in the game with a big push that fell short in the bottom of the 7th.

The Bobcats connected with three doubles in the bottom half and Morgan Grosch secured the final out in the game halting their 4-run rally.

Melanie Basile was perfect at the plate earning four hits with an RBI and scored two runs.

Alyssa Barnas finished with only one hit but that single to center field ultimately was the game changer as it gave Hilbert two more runs and the cushion they needed in the 7th.

Jenna Castricone went 3-for-5 and scored two runs as did Maia Delaney, Basile and Hannah Prenoveau.

Morgan McNeill hit her fourth double this season and poked in two runs joining Morgan Grosch and Prenoveau with 2RBIs.

GAME TWO

Marisa McIntyre struck five out, walked three and gave up six hits with only one earned run to improve to 5-5 in the circle.

Maia Delaney singled to start the night cap.  She scored the Hawks first run just a head of Barnas' run off a Castricone hit up the middle.

That 2-0 lead changed to a 3-run lead when Castricone scored Delaney in the 5th.

After the Bobcats worked their way into a bases-loaded situation, they scored a pair of runs before their final out in the 5th.

Each team earned one more hit over the next two innings and that 3-2 score held up for the Hawks win.

The outside temperature looks pretty favorable for work on the Hawks softball diamond the next few days.  Hilbert is scheduled to host a Buffalo Cup game against league-rival Medaille April 25 and then will close their regular season with back-to-back-to-back AMCC games against Penn State Altoona (April 27) and senior day celebrations April 28 against Mt. Aloysius.

Still out there is one final Buffalo Cup game against D'Youville, set for April 29 with a new start time -> 12pm.
