Late Shot Lifts Medaille to 88-87 Win Over Men’s Basketball

ALTOONA, Pa. – Jaqwan Washington's go-ahead three-pointer with 2.4 seconds remaining in Saturday's Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference matchup between Penn State Altoona and Medaille College helped propel the visiting Mavericks to an 88-87 win in the Adler Arena.

After trailing by as many as 11 points during the second half, Penn State Altoona (12-5, 7-2 AMCC) surged back to take the lead and held an eight-point advantage with just 46 seconds left in the game. But Medaille (6-9, 3-4 AMCC) overcame its late deficit and pulled ahead on Washington's three-pointer on the Mavericks' final possession.

The loss is Penn State Altoona's third in a row at home.

"I apologize to the fans," said Penn State Altoona head coach David McGreal. "We haven't taken care of business at home the last few games. We're going to continue to try and get better."

Robbie Hicks (Rockledge, FL/Rockledge) scored a game-high 23 points for Penn State Altoona, including a 7-for-10 overall performance from the field and a 4-for-7 showing from three-point range. Casey Parkins (Laurel, MD/Atholton) contributed a season-high 22 points for the Lions while shooting 8-for-14 from the floor.

Andruw Harman (Chesapeake, VA/Great Bridge) posted his third double-double of the season for Penn State Altoona, scoring 18 points while securing a game-high 12 rebounds. PJ Charles (Altoona, PA/Altoona) also notched his third double-double of the year, grabbing 11 boards and scoring 10 points.

Medaille got a double-double performance of its own from Kendall McGill, who tied for the team-high in points with 18 while dishing out a game-high 11 assists. Bryce Smith also scored 18 points for the Mavericks, while Washington added 15 points and Rodney Graves scored 14 points.

Medaille established a 46-37 lead by halftime, powered by an 11-for-20 performance from three-point range during the first half.

Graves' three-pointer at 13:42 got the Mavericks out to a 13-6 lead, and four minutes later, Jorarei Bile's layup increased the visitors' advantage to 18-12. Smith's trey at 6:48 boosted Medaille's lead to 27-20, and he connected on another three ball just over a minute later to make it 30-22. Penn State Altoona pulled back to within two points, 37-35, at the 1:28 mark following a layup from Parkins. But Medaille got three-pointers from Smith, Washington, and Graves within the final 57 seconds of the half to hold a nine-point lead at the intermission.

Medaille maintained a lead through much of the second half, going up by as many as 11 points when Dante Moultrie's three-pointer at 13:44 gave the Mavericks a 65-54 advantage.

But Penn State Altoona chipped away at the Medaille advantage over the next several minutes, eventually taking a strong lead into the latter stages of the half. Parkins' three-point play at 11:14 cut the Mavericks' advantage to 67-61, and he later tied the score 67-67 on a pair of free throws at the 9:30 mark. Harman's layup at 7:29 gave the Lions a 71-69 lead, and Hicks connected on a three-pointer at 4:43 to boost Penn State Altoona's advantage to 79-71. Another Hicks trey with 1:06 left in the game kept the home team's lead at eight points, as did Harman's foul shots with 46 seconds remaining that made it 86-78.

But Medaille rallied to outscore Penn State Altoona 10-1 the rest of the way. Smith's three-pointer and McGill's layup narrowed Medaille's deficit to three points with 24 seconds left, and another basket by McGill at the 14-second mark made it a two-point game, 87-85. After forcing a turnover, Medaille came up with the go-ahead shot on Washington's three-pointer with 2.4 seconds on the clock.

Penn State Altoona was unable to come up with a basket on their final, last-second possession, and the Lions suffered the tough home loss to their conference foe.

The Lions will look to regroup for their next game, when Penn State Altoona men's basketball will host nearby AMCC rival Mount Aloysius College this upcoming Wednesday, January 26 at 7:30 p.m. in the Adler Arena.
