Outside Shooting Lifts Lions Past Pioneers

Penn State Behrend hit four 3-pointers to start the game and never trailed as they defeated Alfred State 72-61.

Behrend's senior Andy Niland hit four 3-pointers in the first 4:21 as the Lions jumped out to an early 12-4 lead. The Pioneers cut the lead to 18-14 and then late in the half they trailed only by two, 27-25, but PSB led 34-29 at the half. With 17:36 remaining, ASC trailed 37-36 but would not get any closer. The Lions pushed the lead to as many as 13 late in the contest.

Juwan Toliver (Buffalo/McKinley) led the blue & gold with 14 points while Tahaij Lewis (Rochester/Greece Olympia) finished with 11. Tyrone Freeman (Bronx/Wings Academy) and Kevin Goode (Rochester/Bishop Kearney) both came off the bench and finished with nine.

Niland finished the day 6 for 11 from three and led all scorers with 31 points to go along with six rebounds and three steals. Dan Wanker hit two 3's of his own and finished with 14. Nolan Nuara came off the bench and finished in double figures with 10.

The Pioneers shot 41.1% from the field (23 for 56), 11.8% from three (2 for 17), and 65% from the foul line (13 for 20). The Lions shot 43.4% from the field (23 for 53), 29.6% from three (8 for 27), and 85.7% from the foul line (18 for 21). PSB also held a 38 to 31 advantage on the boards.

The Pioneers are back at the Orvis Activities Center on Friday when they take on Nazareth at 7 p.m.
