Pitt-Greensburg Pounds Wittenberg 16-4

WINTERHAVEN, FL:  The Pitt-Greensburg baseball team combined some big time offensive production and solid pitching performances on Sunday to hand Wittenberg University a 16-4 defeat to improve to 2-3 on the season.  The Bobcats would string together six innings of multiple run baseball, building a seemingly insurmountable lead over the Tigers in the process.

After falling behind 2-0 after the first inning, Dylan Pounds (Houston, PA, Chartiers-Houston) would settle in to shutout Wittenberg over the next five innings.  Pitt-Greensburg would rally around their pitcher and start posting runs at a rapid rate, starting in the second inning.  An Anthony Bozzuto (Greensburg, PA, Hempfield) double scored Matt Germanoski (Ellwood City, PA, Ellwood City) to get things started followed by a Tyler Lilja (Greensburg, PA, Hempfield) run scored on a hard hit ball to third by Jared Pestcoe (Landisville, PA, Hempfield).

The third inning would lead off with back-to-back singles by Greg Lynn (Ellwood City, PA, Ellwood City) and Pounds with each scoring one batter later on a Chad Jacob (Bridgeville, PA, Chartiers Valley) single that caused issues for the Tiger centerfielder.  Jacob would end up on third only to be batted in by a Germanoski sacrifice fly to left field.  After three innings UPG would now hold the lead at 5-2.

Two more runs would follow in the fourth with Lynn and Cody Menges (Belle Vernon, PA, Belle Vernon) crossing home on another hard hit ball by Jacob that forced an error in leftfield.

Anthony Maroadi (North Huntingdon, PA, Norwin) added to the Bobcats advantage with one swing of the bat, bashing a two run homerun to left center that scored Matt Moyer (Greensburg, PA, Hempfield) in the fifth inning to move the score to 9-2.

The sixth inning would see Pitt-Greensburg pick up two more runs after a Germanoski single drove in Pounds followed by a bases loaded sacrifice fly by Bozzuto that scored Jacob.

The Bobcats would add four more runs to their 11-2 lead in the seventh inning with Pounds, Menges, Maroadi, and Germanoski all scoring thanks to back-to-back doubles by Germanoski and Lilja.

Wittenberg would get two back in the eighth inning on a two run homerun to cut their defecit to 15-4.

A Brett Dadig (Pittsburgh, PA, Seton-La Salle) double down the leftfield line would close out the afternoon's scoring as Zach Fodor (West Mifflin, PA, West Mifflin) crossed home plate to give UPG their 16th and final run.

Pounds picked up the win after a solid performance that saw him strike out eight batters over six innings while allowing two runs and two walks.  Nick Anderson (Brockway, PA, Brockway), Tyler Potutschnig (Flinton, PA, Glendale), and Joe Stavor (West Mifflin, PA, West Mifflin) would all make appearances in relief and combine to close out the final three innings.

Germanoski paced the Pitt-Greensburg offense with a 2-3 performance that included a double, a walk, two runs scored, and five RBI.  Lynn and Menges would tally two hits and two runs scored while Pounds would add a team high three runs scored to his performance on the mound.

The Bobcats will enjoy an off day tomorrow before travelling to the Pittsburgh Pirates spring training home, McKechnie Field to face Emerson College on Tuesday, March 10th for a 4:00 nine inning game.
