Panthers Squander 2nd Half Lead, Fall Late to Medaille

Panthers Squander 2nd Half Lead, Fall Late to Medaille

Bradford, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford men's basketball team saw a game-tying effort bounce off the rim as they fell to Medaille 77-75 on Wednesday night.

  • The Panthers got on the board early as Trey Oyler answered a Medaille basket on the opening possession with a three. The visitors quickly tied the game from the charity stripe on the next possession, which would become a common theme for the remainder of the first half, as the teams remained tied, or one possession apart until the 4-minute mark. During this stretch, Nathan Schneider and Isaiah Archie each scored 10 for the Panthers, with Archie having a highlight-reel play midway through the half. Down 19-21, Oyler grabbed a rebound and found Archie through pressure for an outlet pass. Archie gave the ball to Gavyn Mason who lobbed a pass back to Archie who threw down a powerful dunk through contact to tie the game once again.
  • With the game tied at 26, the Panthers were finally able to put together a rally and create some separation between the teams. Schneider made a pair of free throws and Greg Archie made a three from the left wing to put the Panthers up 5. The Panthers answered two Medaille baskets with a Greg Archie floater in the lane and a Mason three-point play before another pair of Schneider free throws put the Panthers up 9. The Mavericks were able to battle back and cut the lead to five, but Hayden Adams made a corner three to end the rally and Isaiah Archie made a putback layup to send the game to the half with the Panthers up 43-35.
  • The Panthers started the second half off in the same fashion they began the game as Oyler made a corner three on Pitt-Bradford's opening possession. Oyler hit a second after a panther stop to push the lead to 14 after a minute of play. Following the Oyler threes, the Mavericks were able to limit the Panthers' offense for a 6-minute stretch, allowing them to reduce their deficit to 6 points. An Alex Rodriguez three with 12:34 seemed to slow the Medaille rally, but they continued to keep the Panthers off the board as they tied the game and took a 3 point lead with 6:17 to go after holding the Panthers to 2 Schneider free throws over a six-minute span.
  • Schneider and Mason each made baskets inside to keep the deficit at one possession, but a Medaille three with 4 minutes to play saw the visitors go up 5. Greg Archie stepped up for the Panthers after the Medaille three, scoring 5 straight to tie the game at 71. He started the run with a free throw and then converted two Medaille turnovers into layups in a 30-second span.  Medaille retook the lead with 2 minutes left on a layup but was unable to add to it after a Panther turnover, allowing Isaiah Archie to tie the game at 73 from the free-throw line, setting up a thrilling finish.
  • With 29 seconds left in the game, Medaille was able to find a space in the Pitt-Bradford zone and make a three to go ahead by three. After a timeout, Greg Archie took the inbound pass and drove to the basket, as his layup bounced off the rim, Isaiah Archie rose up and threw down a tip-in slam dunk to cut the lead back to one point with 16 seconds to go. Following a Panther timeout and foul, the Mavericks made one of two at the line, and Nathan Schneider grabbed the rebound and raced down court. Schneider lost the ball in the Medaille half, but Isaiah Archie was able to get back on top of it to force a jump ball and allow the Panthers to retain possession with just under 4 seconds left. The Panthers inbounded the ball to Greg Archie, who was able to find enough space to float a jump shot towards the basket but saw his effort go off the back rim, ending the game.

Isaiah Archie led all scorers with 18 points in the game. Nathan Schneider finished the game with 16 points, 12 rebounds, and 7 assists, recording his 9th straight double-double. Greg Archie added 14 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists, while Gavyn Mason contributed 12 points off the bench. Trey Oyler went 3-5 from three and scored 9 points.

The loss moves the Panthers to 9-13 on the season with a 4-9 record in AMCC play. They remain one game out of a playoff spot with three contests left to play. This weekend, the Panthers will hit the road for their final away game of the regular season. They travel to Erie, where they will take on Penn State-Behrend at 4:00 p.m.
