Panthers Struggle to Stop Terriers, Fall to Hiram

Bradford, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford men's basketball team got off to a strong start against Hiram on Wednesday but were unable to keep the Terriers off the scoreboard as they fell 95-86.

  • The Panthers jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead as Nathan Schneider opened the scoring with a driving layup and Alex Rodriguez hit a corner three on the following possession. After 5 straight from the Terriers, Rodriguez hit again, making another triple on a second chance opportunity. 
  • Up 10-9 with just over 14 minutes remaining in the half, the Panthers went on a quick 8-0 run to extend their advantage to nine points. Rodriguez made his third three-pointer of the half to start the rally and after two Trey Oyler free throws, Schneider made a free throw and a lay-up to put the Panthers up 18-9.
  • Schneider scored nine straight points for the Panthers, extending their advantage to ten points, but Hiram was able to shut down the Panthers for a three-minute span that allowed them to tie the game at 26. Hiram was able to take the lead with 2:22 to go in the half and pushed their advantage to 5 points. Back-to-back Greg Archie layups got the lead back to one point, but the Terriers scored two unanswered baskets in the final minute to send the game to the break with the Panthers trailing 38-33.
  • Dylan Meyer and Greg Archie made field goals early in the second half, but the Terriers came out firing, outscoring the Panthers 15-5 in the first 4:19 of the half. Hiram eventually pushed their lead to 16 points, but a 7-0 run from the Panthers got the lead back to single digits. Archie made a lay-up and two free throws to start the rally, and then assisted Schneider on a three from the wing to end it. Hiram answered the rally quickly with a three-point play of their own and was then able to answer three straight Pitt-Bradford Baskets to maintain their double-digit lead.
  • With 6:35 to go, Rodriguez scored 5 straight points for Pitt-Bradford to whittle the deficit back to 9 points but saw his effort matched with back-to-back Hiram threes. In the final minutes, the Panthers were able to score 16 late points but saw the visitors make 9 of 10 from the free-throw line to put the game away.

Nathan Schneider had another big game for the Panthers, recording game-high totals in points and rebounds with 29 points and 16 rebounds. He shot 50% from the field. Alex Rodriguez set a new career-high, scoring 17 points on 6 of 9 shooting, including 5-7 from beyond the arc. Greg Archie scored 16 points in the loss, and also grabbed 8 rebounds, and led the team with 6 assists. Isaiah Archie scored 16 points in 20 minutes of play due to early foul trouble.

The Panthers (6-6) have concluded their non-conference slate and will return to AMCC play on Wednesday. They will host Mount Aloysius at 7:30 p.m.
