Hawks Earn a 71-60 Win at Medaille

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Shannon Rogers spent quality time at the foul line tonight and propelled the Hilbert College women's basketball team to a 71-60 victory over the Medaille Mavericks.

The Hawks (3-5) earned their first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference victory (1-2) and dropped the Mavericks to 1-6 and 0-2 in the league.

Equally important, Hilbert earned the first women's basketball Buffalo Cup point in the three-way competition between the Hawks, Medaille and D'Youville.

Rogers earned her fourth double-double of the season scoring 20 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.  The 5-10 forward was 5-for-11 from the floor and a perfect 10-for-10 at the charity stripe.  She added a pair of steals, blocks and finished with an important assist late the game.

Taylor Corts tossed in 17 points and her late-game 3-pointer with just over two minutes left stretched Hilbert's lead back to 11 points and stifled any come-back momentum the hosts thought they could muster.  Corts also earned game-high honors with five steals.

Hilbert dominated the offensive glass cleaning the boards for 18 offensive caroms. Rogers led the way with six followed by Katelyn Proy's five and Ashley Repine's four.

Both teams finished the game with 24-made baskets (five made 3-pointers each) but the Hawks converted 18 of 22 free throws which gave them the edge on the scoreboard as the Mavericks were whistled for 18 fouls.

Repine, Proy and Emily Speidel all added eight points while Repine was one-rebound short of 10 for the game.

The first two quarters of action were even in terms of points scored.  Rogers opened the game with a set of free throws and then earned a traditional three-point play.  After building a 5-0 lead, the Hawks slipped behind by seven (12-5).  Rogers and Repine combined for eight of the team's next nine points to take a 15-14 lead with just over a minute left.  Kelsi Ebert and Rogers closed the quarter going 3-for-4 from the foul line to match Medaille at 18-18.

Corts and Repine put the Royal and White back up by five points early in the second quarter and Katelyn Proy's offensive put-back lifted Hilbert by seven (27-20) with 7:00 to go.  Medaille knocked down three 3-pointers as the quarter ended to take a 35-32 lead to the break.

Hilbert broke open the game behind a 15-5 run and built a 10-point lead with about three minutes remaining in the third period.  Taylor Corts and Emily Gawlak posted a pair of deep shots to keep the Mavericks at an arm's length.  Hilbert extended their lead to 62-49 as the third quarter ended.

The Hawks maintained their double-digit lead through most of the final session until Medaille's point guard hit back-to-back buckets, cutting the score to 68-60 with just over two minutes left.

Emily Speidel pulled down a defensive rebound and feed the ball to Rogers who kicked it to Corts in the corner at 2:02.  The freshman guard extended Hilbert's lead back to double figures and finished the scoring for the day at 71-60.

With just a few days to prepare before their next game, Hilbert will face La Roche College, the six-time AMCC champions, this Saturday December 10 at 2pm.  The Redhawks are coming off a recent 69-57 victory over Pit-Bradford.
