Women's Basketball Secures Play-Off Spot After Win Over the Panthers

HAMBURG, N.Y. –    The Hilbert College women's basketball team outscored Pitt-Bradford in two of the four quarters but still rolled to a 74-60 AMCC victory.

The Hawks also celebrated SIS night to honor men and women who are currently battling breast cancer.

Emily Gawlak became the Hawks All-Time Scoring Leader when she knocked down the first of two free throws with 1:14 left in the first session.

THE BASICS
  • Final Score:  Hilbert 74 | Pitt-Bradford 60
  • Location:   Hafner Recreation Center, Hamburg, NY
  • Records: Hilbert 17-5 (14-3 AMCC) | Pitt-Bradford 2-20  (2-15 AMCC)
HIGHLIGHTS
Emily Gawlak led the Hawks with a solid all-around effort, scoring 22 points, grabbing eight defensive rebounds, dishing four helpers and taking away game-high four steals.  Senior G Taylor Corts drilled 20 points, sinking all eight free throw attempts.
Hilbert finished the game with a season-low six turnovers and secured a spot in the AMCC post-season tournament for the 4th consecutive season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hawks took control early using an 11-0 run at the start of the contest.  The Panthers scored back-to-back buckets before Hilbert extended their lead to 14 points (20-6) after Gawlak eclipsed 2018 grad Kelsi Ebert's record of 1275 career points.
  • Hilbert manufactured 11-points from the charity stripe in the first 10 minutes.
  • The Hawks stretched the margin to 18 points after Macy Kisner beat the Panthers down the floor taking a Ashley Schroeder pass to the rim.
  • Hilbert maintained their double-digit lead throughout the third quarter, but Bradford outscored the hosts 17-13.
  • After the Hawks built another 14-point spread, the grey and white got a little lazy and allowed the visitors to pull back within 10 points at 6:42.
  • Thanks to three consecutive hits from downtown, two by Corts and one by Gawlak, Hilbert re-inflated their cushion and coasted to a 14-point win.

GAME NOTES
  • Sophomore forward Emma Fredo also earned team-high honors with eight rebounds but led all players with five on the offensive end.
  • Freshman Macy Kisner chipped in nine points, seven rebounds, and three assists while freshman point guard Ashley Schroeder added eight points, seven rebounds, and three assists.
  • Senior guard Alayna DeFazio was able to connect from beyond the arc after coming back from an off-season shoulder injury.
  • Hilbert closed the game hitting only 30.4-percent from the floor while the Panthers, who improved their shooting touch in the second half, finished with a 37.5-percent performance.

  • Hilbert and Pitt-Bradford shared space with fans in the stands prior to the start of the game.  Coach Amy Senefelder and her Hawks organized a fund raising event that benefited the Sustain, Inspire, Survive organization which is also referred to as "SIS".
  • SIS provides financial grants in an attempt to help improve the quality of life for men and women who are battling breast cancer.  A breast cancer diagnosis brings with it fear, anxiety, uncertainty and often an increased financial strain.  Medical expenses combined with reduced income can intensify stress and deplete energy in patients just trying to fight for their lives.
  • Each player, coach, official and support staff pledged to "Fight" for someone today in the pregame ceremony.  All money raised in the basket raffles, shirt sales and from financial donations will be awarded to one grant recipient to help off-set day-to-day expenses while they battle through chemotherapy and other treatments.

WHAT'S NEXT
The Hawks have two days to prepare for their rematch against La Roche University this Saturday.  The Redhawks come into the Hafner with only one loss and hold a 2-game lead over Hilbert.
Prior to the start of the game, Hilbert will honor their five senior basketball players during the annual Senior Day celebration.  Stop by early to congratulation Demi Battin, Taylor Corts, Alayna DeFazio, Emily Gawlak and Ashley Repine.
