Wonica, Griffith Lead Pioneers in La Roche Split

Kailey Wonica (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) and Kaylee Griffith (Niagara Falls) led the Alfred State softball team (6-14, 2-4 AMCC) in their split with the La Roche Redhawks (6-10, 1-5) on Thursday afternoon in Alfred, N.Y.

Game one: ASC 4, LR 1

The Pioneers recorded 4 runs, 12 hits, 4 RBIs and 0 errors.

The Redhawks recorded 1 run, 5 hits, 1 RBI and 2 errors.

Pioneer Leaders:

Wonica went 3-for-3 with 2 runs and 1 RBI.

Brittany Fisher (Indianapolis, IN/Southport) went 2-for-3.

Skylar Shaulis (Ovid, NY/South Seneca) went 2-for-3

Sarah Boyce (Cortland) went 2-for-4 with 1 run.

How it Happened:

In the bottom of the first Wonica doubled to center field to plate Boyce and Youngberg singled to center field to bring home Wonica.

In the bottom of the third Faith Capito (Cuba, NY/Portville) singled to left field to bring in Wonica.

La Roche scored in the top of the sixth.

In the bottom of the sixth Griffith singled to left field and Gretchen Hendrickson (Canisteo Greenwood) scored.

Pioneer Pitching:

Fisher (W, 4-7) pitched 7 innings and allowed 5 hits, 1 run, walked 1 and struck out 5. She faced 27 batters, threw 101 pitches and 70 strikes.

Game two: ASC 5, LR 11

The Pioneers recorded 5 runs, 12 hits, 5 RBIs and 3 errors.

The Redhawks recorded 11 runs, 21 hits, 11 RBI and 1 error.

Pioneer Leaders:

Griffith went 4-for-4 with 1 run and 1 RBI.

Brianna Dittman (Brooklyn/James Madison) went 2-for-3.

Wonica went 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs and 1 run.

Nicole Youngberg (Falconer) went 2-for-4 with 1 run and 1 RBI.

How it Happened:

La Roche scored two in the first, one in the second, three in the third and one in the fourth for a 7-0 lead.

The Pioneers started to rally in the bottom of the fourth recording five runs.

Griffith singled to second base to plate Lauryn Engle (Elba).

Wonica singled to center field to plate Griffith and Boyce.

Youngberg singled to plate Wonica.

Faith Capito singled to left field to plate Youngberg.

La Roche scored one in the fifth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh.

Pioneer Pitching:

Abby Beidel (Newville, PA/Big Spring) (L, 2-7) pitched 1.2 innings and allowed 6 hits, 3 runs, walked 2 and struck out 1.

Fisher pitched 5.1 innings and allowed 15 hits, 8 runs and struck out 4.
