Women's Basketball Beaten by Berry; Corts Named All-Tournament

RALEIGH, N.C. - Hilbert College came up empty on their final desperation shot of the game as the women's basketball team dropped a 3-point loss to Berry College (Ga) in the consolation game of the Jackie Ammons Memorial Tournament hosted by William Peace College.

Senior Emily Speidel knocked down a long ball to set the final stage at 67-64, in Berry's favor.  The Hawks' quickly called their last timeout to regroup for the game's final 11 seconds after that make.

Berry then called a timeout with their next possession and soon followed with a turnover.  Without any timeouts left, Hilbert attempted a 3-point shot just before the buzzer sounded but it was deflected away by a Berry defender who secured the neutral site victory.

Kelsi Ebert earned game-high scoring honors with 18 points for Hilbert, hitting both 3-pointers and sinking 7 of 13 from the floor. 

Taylor Corts chipped in 16 point, sinking 6 of 8 from the foul line, while connecting on 2 of 5 from deep. 

Ashley Repine controlled the boards for the Hawks grabbing four offensive and finishing with 10 (8 points) while credited with game-high honors in four steals.

Berry had four players reach double digits in the scoring column led by Kristin Ramersad's 20 points, 10 from the charity stripe.

Hilbert jumped out to a 19-12 lead in the first quarter behind Corts, Repine and Samantha Heiler.  All three did the scoring for the Hawks in the first ten minutes of action.

Berry caught back up in the second period building an 18-10 score to take a 30-29 lead to the locker room.

Hilbert and Berry traded buckets till the last 0:22 of the third period before Berry found the bottom of the net near the horn, taking a 49-47 lead to the start of the final session.

The Eagles slowly stretched their lead to 9 points with 2:03 left to play in the fourth quarter.  Corts and Ebert each sank a pair of free throws cutting the difference to 62-57 at 1:35.

Berry went 5 for 6 from the charity stripe in the last minute and a half while Shannon Rogers went 2 for 2 before Speidel hit the long ball.  

Hilbert held a 39-34 advantage on the glass, were more proficient from the floor finishing with a 38.9% FG%, including a 53.3% clip beyond the arc.  But it was the foul line that hurt the Hawks as they sank only 14 of their 23 attempts vs. Berry's 24 for 32.

Huntingdon beat the hosts, William Peace, 76-69, in the championship game.  At the conclusion of the tournament, Taylor Corts joined Rosie Lynch (Berry), Nadine Ealey (William Peace), Jenna Dorman (Huntingdon) and  the MVP Jello Weatherspoon  (Huntingdon) on the All-Tournament Team.
 
After a quick flight back to Western New York Sunday, the 1-2 Hawks prepare for their next game November 22 against Fredonia at 6pm in the Hafner Center.
