Pioneers Rally Runs out of Time

The Alfred State men's basketball team put together a furious rally in the final eight minutes of the game but couldn't come all the way in a 80-73 loss at Hilbert. The Pioneers trailed by as many as 24 and cut the lead to five in the final seconds.

The Hawks led 43-26 at the and held a 68-44 lead with 7:52 left. The Pioneers responded with a 18-4 run to cut the lead to 10 with just over a minute left. They cut the lead to five twice in the final minute but ran out of time.

Ryan Gentile (Spencerport) was 9 for 18 from the field and 4 for 8 from three to lead the blue & gold with 23 points. Josh Reding (Spencerport) finished with 10 points and six assists, Jahmel Demery (Rochester/Eastridge) came off the bench and had nine, while Donte Jones (Brooklyn Collegiate) chipped in seven.

Hunter Martineau led five Hawks in double figures with 16. Alex Karmanos had 14, Masia Phillips and Jon Evans each had 12, and Christian Przyblyla chipped in 10.

The Pioneers head to Mt. Aloysius on Saturday for a 2 p.m. contest with the Mounties.Alfred State shot 42.6% from the floor, hit 8 of 24 three-point attempts, and was 7 for 9 from the foul line. Hilbert shot 46.6% from the field, hit 10 of 22 from three, and was 16 for 23 from the line.
