Pioneers Lose By One to Pitt.- Greensburg

The Alfred State Women's Basketball team lost at home today to Pitt.- Greensburg 66-65. The Pioneers were up one point, 65-64 with 6 seconds remaining. A missed Bobcat layup attempt led to an offensive rebound that drew a foul; and Madison Scalese converted both from the free-throw line to win Pitt.- Greensburg the game.

The Pioneers controlled the score and pace most of the game. Alfred State shot 46.4% from the field, better than Greensburg's 33.3%. The Pioneers largest lead of 15 points came midway through the third quarter. Alfred State was up 45-30 with 6:06 left in the third and Pitt.- Greensburg brought it within 7 heading into the fourth 56-49.

Alfred State held on to the lead for almost all of the last ten minutes. It wasn't until 46 seconds left when the Bobcats took their first lead of the fourth to go up 64-63. On the next Pioneer possession, Faith McCombs (Amityville, NY / Copaigue) found the basket and knocked in a layup to put Alfred State back up one point with 19 seconds left. Pitt.- Greensburg drew a foul on the next possession, converted both free throws, and walked away with the victory. Melina Maietta and Syndey McCulley were the Bobcats leading scorers with 16 points each.

The Pioneers were led by Taylor Benjamin (Newark Valley, NY / Newark Valley) who had 19 points on 7-12 shooting. Benjamin was only two rebounds away from a triple-double, notching ten assists and eight boards on the day. Faith McCombs recorded a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 16 rebounds.

The Pioneers play again at home on January 11, against Hilbert. The game is set to start at 7 p.m.
