Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Owens Is Now Hilbert's All-Time Steal Leader

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Jerame Owens left it all out on the court tonight and then put it in the record book after the final horn.

The 6'6 senior forward led the Hilbert College men's basketball team in scoring, rebounding, assists and steals (24p/21r/4a/4s) as the Hawks claimed a 93-83 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference victory over D'Youville College.

After becoming the program's only 1,000 point, 1,000 rebound player (after the weekend road game), he also became the program's All-Time steal leader tonight with 190 career steals.

It was not a one-man show though, as the Hawks needed all nine players to pull this league victory out.

Jalen Smith posted another 20-point game, scoring six buckets and all six free throws as well as dishing for four assists.  Sean Weisansal chipped in 19 points, hitting 7-of-11 shots from the floor and was also credited with four assists.

Kirkland Ottey came up big down the stretch sinking all eight free throws, four in the final minute of action to total 12 points.  Xavier Major was held scoreless, but his effort on the glass was appreciated.  The senior forward closed with five offensive rebounds (six total) and swiped the Spartans for three steals.

Ryan Bradt had to play through foul trouble but found 11 points in 13 minutes of limited action.

David Arlaud, Kyle Kline, Nehemiah Kornegay and Malique McCoy combined for seven points, five rebounds lifting the Hawks off the bench.

Hilbert finished the game with a 50.8 field goal percentage while their defense held the Spartans to 42.5%.  The Hawks dominated the boards, out-rebounding D'Youville 56-31 and outscored the hosts 22-7 in second-chance points.

Hilbert benefited from the foul line, not only in the final minute but the entire 40 minutes.  The Hawks scored 24 of their 34 attempts while D'Youville made only four buckets of 11 tries.

Hilbert led from start to finish.  The Hawks held their largest lead in the game with 0:55 left in the first half when Ottey converted his offensive rebound into a 52-36 advantage.

The Spartans cut the deficit to eight points about five minutes into the second half and they kept the game within reach the rest of the way.

D'Youville brought the game to one-point at 13 minutes, but Weisansal, Owens and Kline found the bottom of the net to stretch the score back to a seven-point difference.

The Spartans just hung around and looked for their big break.  They scored a lay-up at 1:09 left setting the score at 84-83 Hilbert.

Hilbert broke the full court pressure with a toss to half court and another feed to a wide-open Bradt in the lane for an easy lay-in at 0:58.

D'Youville came up empty on their next three offensive trips and after each missed shot the Hawks corralled the rebound and walked to the foul line picking up seven more free points for the final 10-point win.

Hilbert returns to Hamburg this weekend when they host Franciscan (1-16, 1-10 AMCC) at 2pm.
