Lions Defeat Alfred State for Second AMCC Win

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Penn State Altoona men's soccer team kept its early season success rolling on Saturday, when the Lions earned a 3-1 victory over visiting Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Alfred State College at Spring Run Stadium.

Grady Ballard (State College, PA/State College) recorded a goal and an assist for the Lions (6-1, 2-0 AMCC), while Cameron McCarthy (Bloomsburg, PA/Bloomsburg) and Ciaran Corr (Newtown Square, PA/Marple Newtown) each scored one goal.

Tommy Packevicz (Trumbull, CT/Christian Heritage) notched his sixth win of the season between the pipes, making two saves.

Abdul Sattar (Mount Olive, NJ/Mount Olive) set up Penn State Altoona's first goal early in the first half, sending a ball toward the box, where it was taken by McCarthy. McCarthy dribbled through the box and fired a well-placed shot past the keeper to put the Lions in front, 1-0, at the 3:15 mark. The goal was the first of McCarthy's collegiate career.

Ballard doubled the Lions' lead at 21:30, when he was awarded a penalty shot and converted for his team-leading ninth goal of the season. Corr increased Penn State Altoona's advantage to 3-0 at 35:22, taking a pass from Ballard in the box and firing a shot into the left side of the goal for his sixth tally of the season.

The score remained 3-0 until Alfred State (3-6, 0-2 AMCC) spoiled the shutout at 88:21, when Farhan Abdi tapped Anthony Smith's cross into the net from 12 yards out to trim the Penn State Altoona lead to 3-1.

Penn State Altoona finished the game with advantages of Alfred State in shot attempts (12-10), shots on goal (6-3), and corner kicks (7-2).

Corr took a game-high five shots, putting two on goal. Ballard attempted four shots and led all players with three shots on goal.

Next up, Penn State Altoona will look to continue its offensive success against USCAA opponent Villa Maria College this upcoming Tuesday, September 28. The Lions travel for a 3:00 p.m. start.
