Proy Reaches 1K, Hawks Hit 20 Wins Before Playoffs Begin Next Week

HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Hilbert College women's basketball team collected a 67-55 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference victory over Pitt-Greensburg this afternoon and posted back-to-back 20 win seasons for the first time in the program's history..

Katelyn Proy notched her 1,000 point after 2,780 minutes of Division III basketball at Hilbert College, becoming just the 5th Hawk to reach that milestone.

With the win, the 15-3 Hawks collected their second consecutive Alleghany Mountain Collegiate Conference regular season championship.  Even though they share the same 15-3 record with La Roche College, the Redhawks won the tie-breaker (better records vs. upper-tiered league opponents) and earned the right to host the AMCC Championship Final Four tourney next weekend in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Seniors Katelyn Proy and Morgan McNeill were honored prior to the start of the game and received a round of applause when they left the court in the final minutes of action.

Coaches John Hall, Scott Foster and Amy Senefelder "are very happy with today's Senior Day team efforts after a slow start.  Taylor Corts showed up big today behind the arc after struggling the past few games; we were very proud of how she rebounded in our final home game."

Coach Senefelder continued, "It was fantastic to see KP score her 1,000 point at home in front of family and friends, and Morgan again was consistent on the glass pulling down six rebounds and played great backside defense."

Corts and Proy led all scorers with matching 22s.  Corts connected on 5-of-7 from beyond the arc, sank 7-of-13 from the floor.  She was perfect from the foul line, and grabbed six rebounds while dishing three assists.

Proy hit 9-of-14 from the field, pulled two offensive rebounds off the glass and earned two steals in the win.  She netted 13 second-half points after leading the Hawks at intermission with nine.

Emily Gawlak, who tossed in seven points and pulled four steals away from Greensburg, threw her fourth assists on the day up high towards the corner of the backboard leading Proy to her 1,000 point with 1:05 left in the game.

Demi Battin shared game-high honors with five assists and was credited with three steals.

The Hawks struggled to hold onto the ball both the first and second quarters offensively.  They were outscored 17-9 after ten minutes but rebounded with a 16-3 performance in the second session even though they committed 10 turnovers off unforced errors by the break.  Hilbert and Greensburg played even in the third quarter, though the hosts still held a 40-28 lead by the start of the final session.  The White and Royal maintained control in the fourth, outscoring the Bobcats 23-17.

#2 Hilbert will battle the winner of #3 Bradford/#6 Mt. Aloysius on Saturday, February 23 at 2pm in the Kerr Fitness Center.  #1 La Roche opens the tournament with a 12 pm game against the winner of #4 Altoona/#5 Behrend.  The First Round games (3/6 and 4/5) will be played at the higher seeded institution on Wednesday, February 20.
