HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The Hilbert College Hawks dropped a pair of rain-soaked, non-conference games at Houghton College this afternoon.
The Highlanders took a 5-1 win in the 3pm game and outlasted the Hawks in the 9-7 nightcap.
Griffith DeMayo went 5 for 7 at the plate and
Zachary Crane tossed the team's first complete game of the season.
GAME ONE
The Hawks didn't hit the score board until the top of the 7th when
Austin O'Shei opened the inning with a walk.
Griffith DeMayo's single and
Tristan Aldinger's fielder's choice pushed him to third base. O'Shei scored on a passed ball.
Zachary Crane, who pitched his third career complete game, finished with seven hits, five earned runs and struck out two.
DeMayo earned two of the three Hawk hits.
GAME TWO
DeMayo went 3 for 4, two runs scored, 2 RBIs and
Jonathan Wilson finished with two hits. Aldinger was credited with two stolen bases as three different Hawks poked doubles in the game.
Michael Goodberry took the loss on the mound after
Frank Propis covered 4.1 innings at the start of the nightcap.
Benjamin Heilig earned the game's first hit and moved to third off a pair of groundouts. DeMayo knocked him home with a hit to the right field setting Hilbert's 1-0 lead.
Frank Propis kept it a 1-1 score through four complete innings, but handed the ball with to
Chad Nelson in the bottom of the 5th with one out. The Highlanders put three runs on the board and built a 4-1 advantage.
Ian Moran doubled down the left field line and walked home when
Tristan Aldinger was at the plate. With bases still loaded,
Jonathan Wilson's RBI fielder's choice scored another run.
James DiSanti single loaded the bases again and scored DeMayo, which forced a Highlander pitcher change.
Shaun Wright's sac fly lifted Hilbert, 5-4, scoring Wilson.
The Highlanders sent 11 men to the plate in the 6th. Mike Goodberry got the first batter to ground out but Houghton flipped the score back in their favor, manufacturing five runs before
Derek Switzer struck out two of the final three batters.
Hilbert ran out of time as back-to-back doubles (
Austin O'Shei and DeMayo, RBI) closed the gap before Wilson's sac fly scored DeMayo in the 7th.
Hilbert (2-10) opens their Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference schedule in seven days when they welcome Penn State Altoona to WNY. The Hawks will host the Lions at Niagara University's turf field Saturday, March 23.
