Men's Basketball Converts from the Charity Stripe For Comeback Win Against Panthers

HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Hilbert College men's basketball team trailed by 19 points early in the second half, but outscored Pitt-Bradford 42-17 the final 16 minutes to collect the Hawks first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference win (76-70) tonight.

Hilbert (5-9, 1-6) went 17-for-18 from the foul line the final seven minutes of the fast-paced game and closed the comeback with a 20-for-22 effort in the second half from the charity stripe.

Masia Phillips, who went 6-for-6 at the line, led the Hawks with 18 points and added five rebounds.  Hunter Martineau was one point behind with 17 and added four assists and five steals in the 39 minutes of action.

Joseph Braniecki lifted Hilbert for the first time in the game at 2:36 when he converted both his makes for the 70-69 edge.   Braniecki chipped in eight points, six rebounds two block shots off the bench.

Appearing in his second-most minutes of the season today, Dre' Turnipseed tossed in 14 points and grabbed three offensive rebounds, as did Martineau and Anthony Buisch.

Hilbert held a 38-28 advantage on the boards after working for 17 offensive rebounds which the Hawks turned into 15 second chance points.

Bradford was whistled for 22 turnovers and 27 fouls while giving up 35 free throws to Hilbert. 

Turnipseed sliced the game to ten points (69-59) from the foul line with just over six minutes left in the game.

Martineau then tallied two freebies, a break-away layup and hit a deep three  cutting the game to three points.

Ryan Hogan converted in the paint in transition and Braniecki's pair from the line gave Hilbert a 70-69 lead which they never relinquished.

Bradford couldn't buy a bucket the rest of the game and sent Hilbert to the charity stripe three more times in the final two minutes.

Myles Hervey put on a strong showing in the paint, hitting 3-of-4 from the floor with one offensive rebound in 10 minutes off the bench.

The Hawks hit the road this weekend when they travel to Penn State Altoona (4-10, 3-5 AMCC) for a 3pm AMCC game.
