Phillips Reaches 1,000 Point Milestone In Hawks Buffalo Cup Win

Hamburg, N.Y. – Hilbert senior Masia Phillips became just the 14th player in program history to surpass the 1,000 point milestone, while posting a double double (15 points, 10 rebounds) to lead the Hawks to a 99-75 Buffalo Cup victory over the visiting Spartans.

THE BASICS
  • Final Score: Hilbert 99 D'Youville 75
  • Location: Hafner Recreation Center, Hilbert College 6pm
  • Records: Hilbert 3-1 (1-0 AMCC) | D'Youville 1-3 (0-1 AMCC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Buffalo Cup rivals came out of the gates neck and neck as just two points separated them through the first 3:31 of play.
  • The Hawks turned to a pair of bench players to spark the offense in the first half. Freshman Lazar Jovanovich had 6 points while going 3 for 3 from the floor, and junior Ryan Hogan drained a pair of 3-pointers to help the Hawks build a 34-21 advantage.
  • Senior Alex Karamanos had a strong first half as well, finishing with 10 points and six rebounds in just 8 minutes of game action.
  • Hilbert continued to widen the lead over the remainder of the first half as they dominated the boards, out-rebounding D'Youville 36-12, including 15 offensive rebounds which resulted in 19 second chance points.
  • After trailing by 16 at the break, the Spartans came out in the second half looking to make the necessary adjustments to crawl back into the game, closing the gap to 62-52 with 15:31 left in the game.
  • Just when you could feel the momentum begin to swing in the Spartans favor, Jovanovich came in off the bench and made another major impact in swinging the momentum back in the Hawks favor by knocking down a pair of threes to expand the lead to 72-52 with just under 14 minutes remaining in the game.
  • Hilbert closed the game strong with senior Hunter Martineau knocking down numerous free throws to maintain a comfortable lead down the stretch.
  • Jovanovich led all Hawks scorers with 20, while the trio of seniors (Martineau, Phillips and Karamanos) all finished with 15 each. Phillips led the royal and white on the boards with 10 rebounds, while Martineau finished with a team-high eight assists.
  • D'Youville's Darrius Hartzog led all scorers with 22 points, while Ryan Davis had a team-best six rebounds.
GAME NOTES
  • The Hawks dominated the boards throughout, out-rebounding the Spartans 67-31, including 28-10 on the offensive boards, resulting in a 29-9 margin in second chance points.
  • Freshman forward Lazar Jovanovich led all Hawks scorers with 20 points off the bench, as Hilbert's bench outscored the D'Youville bench 46-18.
  • The Hawks finished the game shooting 34 of 79 (43.0%) from the floor, including 24 of 30 (80.0%) from the charity stripe.
  • D'Youville shot 25 of 67 (37.3%) from the floor, including 6 of 25 from the 3-point line (24.0%), while going 19 of 30 (63.3%) from the free throw line.
