Schupp Scores Solo Goal in Hawks' Defeat

ALTOONA, Pa. – After battling to a 1-1 tie at half time, the Hilbert College men's soccer team gave up two second period scores to fall 3-1 to Penn State Altoona this afternoon.

Ryan Schupp gave Hilbert hope in the opening minutes of the game when he notched his first goal of the season in the 15th minute.  At 38:34, Matthew Barth was close to giving Hilbert a 2-1 lead, but his shot hit the post and both teams went to the break even.

The Hawks had a tough time pushing the ball forward in the attacking third, as they were outshot 11-2 in the second half.

Altoona pushed high in the second half and they scored a beautiful goal from a shot outside the 18.  Hilbert pushed hard to come back and unfortnately conceded a third goal in counter attack.

"I am very happy with what the team did today - they played with heart and untiy after difficult game against Medaille," said coach Selim Talbi. "I am disappointed for the boys that the result does not show the great game they played,"

Ryan Valentine returned to action and made six saves while the Hawks were missing a few key field players due to injury this afternoon.

Anthony Pellicano, Schupp, Barth, Paul Caterina  and Daniel Pulaski (2) were the offensive weapons as each were credited with a shot this afternoon.  Schupp got his foot on the deflected ball in the box and chipped it over Altoona's goalie early in the game.

For the match, the Lions held a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks and were whistled for five off sides while Hilbert closed with none.

Hilbert returns to action next week when they travel to Pitt-Bradford for a 4:15p kick October 5th.
