Hawks Second Half Rally Falls Short

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The Hilbert College women's lacrosse team  battled back to a four point spread mid-way through the second half, but ultimately fell 19-8 to Houghton College tonight.

Freshman Aaryonah Vaughn  led the way with three goals for the 0-2 Hawks and Ashley Repine posted her second double figure save game against the 1-3 Highlanders.

Houghton doubled-up Hilbert in shots in the first 30 minutes with an 18-9 advantage as they built a 9-3 lead by intermission.

The Hawks picked-up their pace in the second half and drew closer with an 18-11 shot difference which closed the gap in scoring as they put six balls in the back of the net.

Repine made 12 saves (eighth career double digit) after facing 36 shots (30 on-goal) and her efforts between the pipes  kept the Hawks alive.

The Highlanders built a 7-goal lead before Brooklynn Gormel tallied her first marker of the day at 12:17.  Vaughn notched her opening hit at 5:02 and less than two minutes later Calista Mis found an angle which sliced the margin to five (8-3) with 3:49 left.  Houghton won the following draw control and finished the half with a 9-3 lead with their final goal just nine-seconds later.

The Hawks opened the second half with back-to-back scores by Sam Lawicki and Gormel before they traded scores.  Ashley Binn feed Vaughn at 18:10 which allowed Hilbert to maintain their four-goal margin (10-6) .

After two more goals, one by each team, Hilbert was still within reach.  Vaughn pulled the Hawks closer at 13:07 (11-7) only to find the hosts jump back ahead 13-7 with nine and a half minutes left in the game.

Houghton closed the match outscoring Hilbert 5-2 as they pulled away with the win.

Josephine Ban (three draw controls) finished the Hawks' scoring stringing together two goals 120 seconds apart.

Gormel filled the stat sheet scoring two goals, scooping five ground balls, causing two turnovers and winning six draw controls.

Hilbert is scheduled to return to action this Friday, March 23 with an AMCC game at Franciscan University in Ohio.
