Martineau Reaches 1,000 Point Career Milestone In 69-65 Loss To Behrend

Hamburg, N.Y. – Hilbert senior Hunter Martineau became the 15th player in program history to surpass the 1,000 point career milestone while finishing with 20 points, five assists and three steals in a 69-65 loss to Penn State Behrend.

THE BASICS
  • Final Score: Penn State Behrend 69 Hilbert 65
  • Location: Hafner Recreation Center, Hilbert College 6pm
  • Records: Hilbert 10-4 (6-3 AMCC) | Penn State Behrend 10-4 (7-2 AMCC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Mitchell King sunk a three to open the game, which senior Masia Phillips answered with a three of his own on the following possession.
  • From there, the Hawks defense shut down the Lions attack, led by sophomore Warren Richardson who had three blocks over that span, to spark a 13-4 run to put the Hawks up 18-9 with just under 14 minutes to play in the opening half.
  • Behrend came storming back to cut the lead to 23-18 before freshman guard Kyreese Fisher drilled a three to extend the Hilbert lead back to eight.
  • Over the next few minutes of action there was back and forth play with some uncharacteristically poor shooting from long range from the Lions, while the Hawks made some untimely turnovers.
  • With 4:33 to go in the half, Derrick Clark hit a three to bring Behrend within three at 34-31.
  • After a pair of Hawks baskets by Jon Evans and Hunter Martineau, Behrend's Kenny Fukon scored a pair of baskets to send both teams into the intermission all tied up at 38.
  • An acrobatic layup by Hunter Martineau opened up the Hawks scoring in the second half, tying the game at 40 just over a minute into play. Kyreese Fisher added a pair of free throws on the following possession to help the Hawks regain the lead 42-40.
  • The Lions answered with five consecutive points before Masia Phillips hit a mid-range jumper, followed by a Martineau free throw to tie it up at 45 with 14:40 left to play.
  • Nick Fiumara answered back with a three for Behrend, but Hilbert's Jon Evans drained an open three on the following possession to answer right back.
  • Both teams went scoreless over the next minute and a half of play before Nick Fiumara drained a pair of threes to lead a 9-2 run to put the Lions up 59-52 with 8:31 remaining.
  • After some sloppy play on both sides, Martineau connected on a strong drive to the basket for his 1000th career point, cutting the Behrend lead to 61-58.
  • Behrend answered with a bucket from PJ Gourley, but Martineau added another fast break bucket in traffic to get the Hawks within two points with just under four minutes to play.
  • A pair of Kenny Fukon layups put the Lions up 67-61 with under two minutes to play, which proved to be too much for the Hawks to overcome as they ultimately fell 69-65.
GAME NOTES
  • In the first half, Warren Richardson filled up the stat sheet with one of his strongest halves of his career, scoring six points while grabbing five boards, blocking four shots and and adding a steal.
  • The Lions bench outscored the Hawks bench 25-15, and also out-rebounded Hilbert 45-35.
  • Hilbert won the turnover battle, committing only eight turnovers to Behrend's 15, which led to a 22-8 spread in Hilbert's favor in points off turnovers.
  • Hilbert finished the game shooting 27 of 67 (40.3%) from the floor, including 4 of 18 (22.2%) from 3-point range, while going 7 of 14 (50.0%) from the free throw line.
  • Behrend shot 30 of 61 (49.2%) from the floor, including 5 of 18 from the 3-point line (27.8%), while going 4 of 10 (40.0%) from the charity stripe.
