Men's Soccer Outmatched by Barons

Steubenville, Oh. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford men's soccer team took on former AMCC foe Franciscan University on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Barons 7-1.

The Panthers fell behind early in the game once again, as the hosts were able to score after just one minute of play. They faced near constant pressure from the Barons, who were able to increase their advantage to 3 goals before the Panthers could record a shot. The Panthers' first effort toward goal came in the 23rd minute when Rodney Walker was able to force a save out of the Franciscan keeper. the momentum did not stay with the Panthers for long, as Franciscan scored their fourth from the penalty spot in the 28th minute, and added a fifth in the 32nd. 

Trailing 5-0 after the break, the Panthers looked to find positives in the second half, and were able to get on the board after 53 minutes. Following an infraction inside the box, the Panthers were awarded an indirect free kick. After the ball was put into play by Lysandre Chaabi, Scott Compson blasted a shot over the onrushing goalkeeper and defense and into the roof of the net. The goal was Compson's first of the season. Chaabi was credited with his first career assist on the play. 

The Panthers were once again unable to hold onto the momentum for long after the goal, as the Barons quickly countered, scoring a goal after an attack down the left wing. They went on to add a 7th goal in the 63rd minute. Evan Schmidt made 3 late saves to keep the score at 7-1.

Scott Compson scored the goal for the Panthers, his first of the year and 12th career tally. The Panthers were only able to muster 4 total shots, putting two on goal. Evan Schmidt made 7 saves in his first start of the season.

The loss drops the Panthers to 1-3 on the season. After 4 games away from Bradford, the Panthers will open their home schedule with a non-conference tilt with Nazareth on Tuesday, September 13th. Kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m. on the soccer field at the Kessel Athletic Complex.
