Salem, Va. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford softball team kicked off its 2020 season with two tight losses at the Mountain Mash tournament, hosted by Roanoke College. They lost 4-0 to the hosts to start the day and finished with a 4-2 loss to Fredonia.

Game 1: Roanoke 4 -Pitt.-Bradford 0

  • The Panthers looked to get on the board early as runners reached scoring position in the first two innings, but the Panthers were unable to bring them around to open the scoring.
  • Jordan Uhing kept the Maroons at bay early, but they took advantage of their first opportunity to score with a two-out rally in the third. After a walk, Roanoke used back to back doubles around a passed ball to bring in two runs.
  • The Panthers were able to get their first hit of the season in the 3rd. Gabby Carpenter rapped a two-out single to center but was unable to move any further.
  • Uhing showed some moxie in the 4th, working out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam. The Maroons loaded the bases on a hit batter, walk and bunt single. Uhing got the next three batters to pop up twice and ground out to escape the situation unharmed.
  • Roanoke added on two runs late in the game, one in the 6th and another in the 7th. In the 6th the Maroons followed up a one-out walk with a double to left that chased the runner all the way around the bases for the third run. The 4th run scored on back to back singles around a stolen base in the 7th.
  • The Panthers were able to get two runners on base in their final at-bat. Melissa Nye drove a one-out single to center and after a fielder's choice, Daytona Wentzel reached on an infield single. Unfortunately, the Panthers' rally ended there with a strikeout to close the game.

Game 2: Fredonia 4 - Pitt.-Bradford 2

  • The Panthers got off to a tough start in the first inning as Fredonia was able to score 2 unearned runs on 2 hits and 2 errors. Starting Pitcher Kerrigan Hoffmann was able to avoid further damage in the inning, getting the last two batters of the inning to ground out to second and strike out swinging to end the threat.
  • Pitt-Bradford was able to get a run back right away in the top of the 2nd. Sophia Fratercangelo was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Kendra Colegrove drove a double to right but saw the runner thrown out at the plate trying to score. Colegrove would score a batter later as Mackenzie Bonyak singled her in.
  • Hoffmann was able to put up a shutdown inning in the second and was rewarded as the Panthers tied the game in the 3rd. Rachel Przybysz led off the inning with a single. She quickly stole second and moved to third a batter later on a grounder to 1st. Sophia Fratercangelo came through with a clutch two-out single to tie the game. The next two Panthers walked to load the bases but were unable to score as the inning ended on a fielder's choice.
  • The Blue Devils retook the lead in the bottom of the 4th. The run scored on a Panthers' error with two outs following a base hit. They added a security run in the 5th. The leadoff batter reached base on a 4th Panther error, and after a flyout, hit a double to score the 4th and final run of the game.
  • The Panthers looked to rally in the 9th and were able to load the bases early. Przybysz led off with a single and then Gabby Carpenter reached without an out being made on a fielders' choice. Following a strikeout, Fratercangelo singled to load the bases but the next two batters struck out and flew out to right to end the game.

Head coach Tina Phillips said, "It was our first time out this year and it could have been a different outcome with a few more games under our belt. We did a lot of positive things today, looking forward we need to capitalize on our chances early. We played some good competition today and we got two very good outings from Jordan and Kerrigan. We have a long way to go, but for our first time out it wasn't a bad day."

The Panthers will look to turn things around right away as they play two more games on Saturday. They start the day with a rematch with Fredonia at 11:00 a.m. and then follow that up with a 1:00 p.m. matchup with Susquehanna. All games will be at the Moyer Complex in Salem, Va.
