Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Medaille for First AMCC Win

ALTOONA, Pa. – Penn State Altoona women's volleyball secured its first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference win of the fall on its home court, when the Lions took care of Medaille College 3-0 in the Adler Arena on Saturday afternoon.

Penn State Altoona (7-2, 1-1 AMCC) posted a dominant 25-9 victory in the match's opening set, then grinded out 25-19 and 25-23 wins in the next two sets to clinch the sweep of Medaille (3-9, 0-1 AMCC). The Lions eclipsed their previous team-best mark in attack percentage, which was accomplished in last night's win over Elmira, by swinging at a .267 clip as a unit.

Kayla Moran (Boalsburg, PA/State College) led all players in the match with 26 assists and five service aces, while also chipping in five digs and three kills. Lacee Barnhart (Bellefonte, PA/Bald Eagle) had a team-high 9.0 points, finishing with seven kills, one ace, and one solo block to go along with five digs.

Makenna Bauer (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) also recorded seven kills while also adding a block assist. Lydia Mock (Alum Bank, PA/Chestnut Ridge) had five kills while earning the team-high in digs with eight.

Grace Shelley (York, PA/York Catholic) led all players in blocks, finishing her day with one solo block and one block assist while also tallying two kills. Taylor Myers (Morrisdale, PA/West Branch) posted four kills, Alexis Cannistraci (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) had three kills, Karlie Feathers (Bellwood, PA/Bellwood-Antis) and Taylor Kilmer (Julian, PA/Bald Eagle) recorded two kills each, and Makenna Port (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) added one kill.

Anna Batrus (Altoona, PA/Altoona) finished with five digs, and Erin Lutz (State College, PA/State College) had four digs.

Penn State Altoona started the match with a convincing 16-point win in the first set. The Lions jumped out to leads of 11-2 and 19-7 while hitting .444 during the set, recording 15 kills and committing only three errors.

In the second set, Medaille hung with Penn State Altoona, keeping the score differential much closer than during the match's first set. With an 11-9 lead midway through, the Lions used a modest 6-2 run to widen the gap to 17-11 and force a Medaille timeout. Penn State Altoona remained on top throughout the rest of the set, getting kills from Kilmer, Myers, Bauer, and Port and an ace by Feathers during the remainder of the set.

Medaille battled its way into the lead during the third set, as the Mavericks clung to a 20-19 advantage in the set's latter stages. But the Lions ripped off five straight points to leap in front, 24-20, getting two kills and a block from Barnhart, a kill from Kock, and a Medaille attack error. The visitors responded by keeping their hopes alive with a 3-0 run that narrowed Penn State Altoona's lead to one, 24-23. But, out of a timeout, Bauer's kill provided the match-clinching point for the Lions.

Penn State Altoona women's volleyball wraps up its three-match homestand on Tuesday, October 5, dipping back into non-conference play to take on Penn State Harrisburg at 7:00 p.m. in the Adler Arena.
