Pioneers Split Saturday Tri-Match

The Alfred State volleyball team split a pair of matches on Saturday. They fell 15-25, 11-25, 20-25 in their AMCC opener vs. Pitt Greensburg but bounced back for a 18-25, 25-19, 28-26, 25-20 non-conference victory over D'Youville.

The Pioneers started the day slow vs. Pitt Greensburg as they hit .048 in the contest and had seven service errors. Isabella Slocum (Hornell/Cal Mum) was a bright spot as she collected seven kills on eight attempts. Kiara Perkins (Coudersport, PA) finished with eight kills while Jordan McCoey (Horseheads) passed out 23 assists.

D'Youville used a run midway through the 1st set to take control and take the early lead. In the 2nd set, the Pioneers led 7-6 before going on to win the next six points to take control of the set to even the match up at 1-1. The 3rd set proved to be a wild back and forth affair. D'Youville led 15-9 and 20-13 before the Pioneers rallied to get back to eventually tie the set at 24. A few points later, the blue & gold were able to pull out the 28-26 victory. D'Youville led 17-10 in the 4th set before the Pioneers turned it on and raced all the way back. Perkins served for seven straight points in the rally.

Slocum continued her solid day with a team high 13 kills (.500 hitting percentage). Alyssa Fox (Letchworth) finished with 12 kills and 13 digs, Perkins had 10 kills and 19 digs, and Jordan Stauffeneker (Lansing) chipped in 14 digs. McCooey passed out 40 assists and Mya VanDuyne (Newark) chipped in seven kills.

The Pioneers are right back in AMCC action on Wednesday when they host Pitt Bradford at 7 p.m.
