The Franciscan University women's tennis team ended its 2017-18 campaign at the 2018 NCAA Tournament as the Lady Barons fell to Washington and Lee, 5-0, Friday afternoon.
The match got off to a competitive start as the No. 1 doubles pair of senior Emmy Mathias and junior Maria Binette hung tough with their Generals opponent. Down 2-0 early in the match, quick reflexes from Mathias at the net secured the win in the third game to cut the match lead to 2-1. The Generals were able to capitalize on strong serving to win six-straight games and give W&L a 1-0 lead in the match.
At No. 2 doubles, junior Julia Razook and Taranee Karimpour kept the match close as they tied it at 1-1 and again at 2-2 before the Generals rattled off six-straight games to give W&L a 2-0 lead in the match with the 8-2 victory.
First-year players Natalia Andreu and Ana Haddad began to find good chemistry on the court but we unable to take a game off of their W&L opponents as the Generals finished off doubles with a 3-0 lead going into singles action.
Mathias battled strong at No. 4 singles but her opponent was able to clinch the fourth point for W&L with a 6-0, 6-0 win before Haddad fell at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-0 in the final completed match.
The Lady Barons wrap up their season at 12-7 after their second-straight AMCC title.
