FRANCISCAN CROWNED AMCC WOMEN'S TENNIS CHAMPION

#1 Franciscan University claimed its second AMCC women's tennis title after defeating #2 Penn State Behrend 5-2 Saturday afternoon at The Club/Sport and Health in Monroeville, PA.

Franciscan took the early 2-1 lead after doubles play when No. 3 doubles partners Maggie Vander Woude and Taranee Karimpour secured the quick 8-0 victory over the Lions, followed by Madelyn Conrad and Gracel Hammel at No. 2 doubles, who picked up the 8-4 win. Behrend's No. 1 singles partners, Chelsea Czerwinski and Jacqueline Cannella, kept the Lions in the match with the 8-4 victory over the Barons.

Behrend junior Kelly Miller, playing at the No. 5 singles spot, kept the hopes alive for the Lions by picking up the 6-4, 6-1 victory. However, it was Franciscan who took the next three matches to take home the championship title. No. 1 Madelyn Conrad (6-3, 6-4) was next off the court, followed by No. 4 Claire Haddad (6-0, 6-4). No. 2 Maria Binette clinched the victory for her team, as she won 6-2, 7-5.

The Barons will receive an automatic bid to represent the AMCC at the NCAA national tournament, with the first round opening up on May 12-14.
