Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Volleyball Grabbed a Set From Altoona

HAMBURG, N.Y. – Three Hawks posted double-digit kills but that wasn't enough fire-power for the Hilbert College men's volleyball team as they suffered a 3-1 set-back to Penn State Altoona in the opening game of the NEAC cross over weekend.

Altoona (11-3) jumped on the Hawks early in the first set and claimed a 25-16 victory, but Hilbert fought back and won the second set in exciting fashion (26-24).  After posting both double-digit kills and errors in sets three (25-20) and four (25-19), Hilbert fell to 6-8 in league standings and now sit in a two-way tie with D'Youville College in 5th place.

Michael Podgorny tossed down 11 kills and was joined by Korey Schwab and Tanner Makowski who each posted 10.  Makowski closed the match with 10 block assists as well as a .250 attack percentage leading the Hawks, who as a team, finished at .079.

Altoona was led by Matt Huey who collected 18 kills in 45 attempts (.178) along with 11 digs and Billy Smith who assisted on 39 kills.

Adam Heftka quarterbacked the Hawks with 34 assists and Trevor Gabamonte added 15 digs.

Medaille College stayed perfect on the season with their straight set victory over Wilson College.  The Mavericks won 25-19, 25-19 25-21 and claimed the number one seed and the right to host the NEAC play-offs next weekend.  Pete McKelvey and Sam Bloomberg lead a balanced attack with nine kills each as the Mavericks setters shared time on the court posting 37 assists between them.

Aaron Hoke led the new-start Wilson program with eight kills and six digs as they continue to search for their first win of the season.

In the 8pm game, D'Youville College rushed out to a fast 25-14 opening set victory behind strong serving.  Lancaster Bible relaxed and rallied for a 25-20 win to even the match at 1-1.  The Spartans held on and outlasted the Chargers in the third (25-20) and fourth (25-22) sets for the win.

Chris Busha led D'Youville with 12 kills while Collin McMahon was credited with 41 assists and three service aces.

Kasey Gentry chipped in 14 kills and four block assists for Lancaster Bible who sit in eighth place at 2-12.

The other top seeds, Penn State Altoona, SUNY Poly and Keuka College will be battling in their final game(s) of the season tomorrow to see where they position themselves for post-season play.
