Men's Basketball Survives Second Half Surge To Take Down Alfred State 80-73

Hamburg, N.Y. – The Hawks used a balanced attack, with five players scoring in double figures, to survive a late second half surge from the Pioneers to secure an 80-73 AMCC win.

THE BASICS
  • Final Score: Hilbert 80 Alfred State 73
  • Location: Hafner Recreation Center, Hilbert College 6pm
  • Records: Hilbert 12-7 (8-6 AMCC) | Franciscan 5-13 (3-10 AMCC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A trio of threes from Christian Przybyla, Alex Karamanos and Zach Miller put the Hawks up 13-5 in the early going.
  • The Pioneers began to swing momentum in their favor with a 6-3 run, but the Hawks answered immediately with a 6-0 run, capped by a Warren Richardson jumper in the paint to extend the lead to double digits at 22-11 with 10:00 remaining in the opening half.
  • With Hilbert up 11, the Pios scored five unanswered points to shrink the lead to six before Masia Phillips sunk a big three to answer back.
  • Both offenses went cold over the next couple of minutes until Jon Evans hit a contested jumper in the paint, followed by a pair of threes by Hunter Martineau and Kyreese Fisher to fuel a 10-2 Hilbert run to give the Hawks a 36-20 lead with just over three minutes left in the half.
  • After trading baskets down the stretch, Hunter Martineau hit from three to close out the half with the Hawks leading 43-26.
  • There was back and forth play over the opening three minutes of the second half before Jon Evans capped off a three-point play to spark the Hawks offensive attack. Zach Miller and Christian Przybyla followed up Evans with threes from long range to put the royal and white up 56-33 with 16:13 left in the game.
  • The Pios answered with a 7-3 run, but Hilbert put a halt to that as they answered with a 7-2 run of their own capped by a Jon Evans three-point play to take a 24 point lead with 9:35 left on the clock.
  • From there on out it was all Pioneers as they outscored the Hawks 31-12 over the next nine minutes to cut their deficit to 78-73 with 12 seconds left, but it wasn't quite enough as they fell short in their comeback effort, resulting in an 80-73 win for the royal and white.
  • Hunter Martineau finished with a team-high in points (16) and assists (5), while Warren Richardson ripped down a team-high eight rebounds and Alex Karamanos added a team-high three steals for the Hawks.
  • Ryan Gentile finished with a game-high 23 points for Alfred State, while Brandon Gosley added a team-high seven rebounds and Josh Reding led the Pioneers with a game-high six assists.
