Baseball Goes 0-2 at Niagara in AMCC Play

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. - The Hilbert Hawks hosted Pitt-Bradford in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference double header played at Niagara University this afternoon.

Bradford drove away with a sweep over the Hawks, winning 5-1 in game one and 12-6 in the night cap.

Winfred Nelson tossed another complete game in the early tilt and Henry Bowers went 5.2 innings in the late-game loss.

The Hawks (6-14) are still off to the program's best start in AMCC play even after they moved to a 3-5 AMCC record.  Bradford became the first AMCC opponent to sweep the Hawks this spring as Hilbert is just one of three teams lucky enough to get eight games played todate.

GAME ONE

Winfred Nelson (1-3) went the distance in his second complete game this spring, covering seven innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits.

The right-handed senior became the seventh pitcher at Hilbert to surpass 100 career innings on the mound.  He currently sits at #6 with 105.2 and is inching his way up the ranks, needing just two more innings to move into 5th place.

BASEBALL CAREER STATS

Bradford's starting ace limited the Hawks to four hits as he struck out 10 through seven innings of work.

Connor Duck's RBI double knocked in Eric Flores who scored Hilbert's solo run in the 5-1 defeat.

Duck, Ian Moran, Flores and Treyton delaCuesta combined for all of Hilbert's hits in the opening game.

GAME TWO

Hilbert's 4-3 lead, through the first four innings, was fueled Nelson's 2RBI double and Jared Welnowski's RBI in the first inning.  Then, in the 3rd, Welnowski singled up the middle for another RBI which lifted the Hawks by one run.

Bradford manufactured four runs in the 5th flipping the scoreboard in their favor.  With no runners on the bags Eric Flores, who was the first batter at the plate, hit his first Home Run of the season.  His solo run paired with Tristan Aldinger's RBI sac trimmed the difference to one 6-7.

Bradford continued to add runs on the board while Hilbert was held hit-less the final four innings.

Nelson went 2-for-3 with 2RBIs and Welnowski finished with a 2-for-4 day at the plate.  Duck (3) and Flores (2) finished with multi runs.

Bowers (1-2) struck out three, walked four and gave up 10 hits which turned into four earned runs.

Hilbert is scheduled to travel to Elmira College this Friday for a single 9-inning game beginning at 3pm April 13th.  They will then travel south into central Pennsylvania for their AMCC match against Mt. Aloysius April 14 beginning at 1pm in Cresson, Pa.
