Women's Basketball Earned a 72-64 Non-Conference Win On Road

ELMIRA, N.Y. - Taylor Corts and Macy Kisner led the Hilbert women's basketball team to an eight-point non-conference road win today at Elmira College after both teams feasted on big meals for Thanksgiving.

THE BASICS
⦁    Final Score: Hilbert 72 Elmira 64
⦁    Location:  Speidel Gym, Elmira College, 2:00 pm
⦁    Records: Hilbert College 4-3 (1-1 AMCC) Emira 2-3  (0-0 Empire 8)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Taylor Corts scored first for Hilbert then converted off a Macy Kisner pass which put the Hawks first four points on the board.  Kisner then created a stop on defense and made her way to the charity stripe which gave Hilbert their first lead in the game (6-5).
  • The Hawks slowly pulled away with a Demi Battin 3-pointer that built a 15-7 advantage but the Soaring Eagles sliced the difference back to four points (15-11) by the start of the second quarter.
  • Both teams battled multiple empty trips at the start of second session before Kisner chased down an offensive rebound which led to Ashley Schroeder's short jumper in the paint.
  • Hilbert again looked as if they were pulling away, thanks to several easy scores in the paint, off out of bounds plays as well as short hits in transition and another Battin long-ball.  But Elmira closed the final minute with back-to-back quick buckets and pulled within four points by intermission (30-26).
  • Elmira stormed out of the locker room, scored nine unanswered points, and took a 32-30 lead less than 85-seconds into the second half.
  • The Hawks responded with a 15-0 run and forced Elmira to take a time out, now trailing 45-35. Gawlak started that run in the lane, and Corts knotted the game with a long distance dial up from out top.  Battin's penetration/kick to Schroeder led to another 3 pointers in that span. And Kisner, who fought for another offensive rebound, fed Corts for her second hit outside the arc that she sandwiched around a pair of scores in the paint.
  • With Hilbert holding a 47-40 advantage at the beginning of the fourth, Kisner went coast-to-coast for two and almost repeated that on the Hawks' next defense-to-offense transition as she had to attempt two from 15-feet out instead of in the paint.
  • Things go interesting when Elmira used a 6-0 run and pulled within five (59-54) with just over two minutes to go.
  • Kisner dove for a loose ball off a Hilbert missed free throw and that extra effort led to a Hilbert 3-point play after Corts scored in the paint with 54-seconds left (64-59)
  • Elmira used two timeouts  to advance the ball and scored five points while Hilbert calming hit their free throws down the stretch for the win.
  • Taylor Corts led all scorers with 28 points, hitting 8-for-8 at the foul line.  Macy Kisner finished with 14 points, was one rebound shy of a double double, but was credited with three steals.
  • Elmira's Bridget Yaw led the hosts with 17 points and six assists.
NOTES
  • 90% of both team's turnovers in the first half were whistled as travels.
  • Kisner controlled the offensive glass, earning five caroms which led to multiple second chance scores.  She dominated the final 10 minutes (five rebounds) and came-up with a big block with just under 3-minutes left in the game.
  • Hilbert sank 24-for-8 from the field (.414) and went 19-for-26 at the foul line.  They earned 43 rebounds (10 OR) and connected on only five 3-pointers.
  • Elmira went 22-for-68 from the flor (.324) and hit only 12-of-19 free throws.  They earned 39 rebounds (13 OR) and connected for eight shots from downtown.
