Aquilina Bomb Sends Game to Overtime, Hawks Win Thriller

HAMBURG, N.Y. – Freshman Tyler Aquilina led Hilbert with 17 points as he shined in the men's basketball team's  80-77 come-from-behind overtime win against Alfred State College tonight.

Aquilina nailed a 3-point shot with 25-seconds left in regulation to force overtime with a 71-71 score.  The southpaw then hit a pair of free throws with 17-seconds in the extra period which gave the Hawks only their second lead in the game, but one that they kept till the final horn.

Hilbert, 12-8, used a 42-36 second half rally to force OT after trailing 35-29 at half time.

The Hawks found themselves down by four points with 3:32 left in overtime.  Hilbert finished a fast break defense to offense transition which was started by Joseph Braniecki's steal, Hunter Martineau's pass and Parucki's lay-in mid-way through the period.

Hilbert continued their roll when Braniecki hit one of two at the foul line slicing the deficit to one point and Martineau lifted Hilbert to their first lead, 76-75 with 58-seconds on the clock.

The Hawks put A-State at the foul line and Juwan Toliver, the game's leading scorer with 19 points, hit both shots and swung the score back in the Pioneer's favor.

Aquilina hit back-to-back free throws with 0:17 left and lifted Hilbert back on top for good.  Martineau closed the game hitting one more freebie for the final 80-77 score.

Hilbert struggled from the floor and finished with a 37.8% field goal shooting night. Aquilina was credited with five of the Hawks' six made 3-pointers (18 attempted) and Hilbert made 18-of-25 shots from the foul line.

Alfred State was on fire in the second half of the game.  After shooting 46.7 percent from the floor early, they made 15-of-20 shots in the second period (75%) before they went 1-of-5 in the extra session.

The Pioneers gained a 12-rebound advantage but Hilbert cleared the glass for 18 offensive rebounds.

Hunter Martineau added 10 points and matching sevens – in assists and steals while Masia Phillips added 15 points in 37 minutes of action.

Braniecki hit 50% of his shots from the floor to close with 14 points and Parucki collected 12 points and four offensive rebounds.

#5 Hilbert (8-5) closes the home-portion of their AMCC games next week when they host #9 D'Youville (2-11) February 7 and #6 Greensburg (4-9) February 10, on Senior Day.  The Hawks close their regular season at #1 Penn State Behrend (Feb 14) and #6 Mt. Aloysius (Feb 17).
