Buffalo, N.Y. – Sophomore forward Warren Richardson finished with 12 points and a career-high 17 rebounds, while senior point guard Hunter Martineau added 17 points and eight assists to lead the Hawks to a big 86-72 Buffalo Cup victory over D'Youville.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• After trailing 2-0 in the early going, the Hawks turned to Jon Evans to ignite the offense. The freshman forward answered the call, scoring six points over the next two minutes of action to spark an 8-0 run and put Hilbert up 10-4 just over three minutes into the game.
• The Spartans responded by cutting the lead to 12-10 over the next few possessions, before Ryan Hogan and Kyreese Fisher drained a pair of threes on back to back possessions to build a 20-13 Hilbert lead with just over 12 minutes remaining in the opening half.
• D'Youville went on a 6-0 run over the next two minutes to cut the lead to one at 20-19.
• Both teams traded baskets over the next few possessions, before Lazar Jovanovich hit a pair of threes to spark a 15-2 Hilbert run to give the Hawks a 38-22 lead with 4:15 remaining in the half.
• D'Youville turned up the intensity on the defensive end over the remainder of the half, limiting Hilbert's offense to just one field goal over the final four minutes, resulting in a 14-3 run to close out the half down 41-36.
• The Hawks came out of the break looking to push the pace, as they hit four layups to start the half on a 9-2 run to extend the lead back to double digits with just over 17 minutes left in the game.
• D'Youville responded with a pair of baskets, but a Hunter Martineau three-point play swung the momentum back to Hilbert.
• The Hawks turned to their defense from there, as they held the Spartans scoreless over the next six minutes of game action, resulting in a 13-0 run to put the Hawks up 63-43 with under 11 minutes to go.
• Just when it appeared to be over, the Spartans went on a 12-4 run to cut their deficit to 67-55 with 7:48 left to keep the Hawks on their heels.
• However, Hilbert answered anything the Spartans threw at them down the stretch, while they cruised to an 86-72 victory.
• Hunter Martineau led the Hawks offensive attack with a team-high 17 points and a game-high eight assists, while Warren Richardson led the Hawks on the glass with a game-high 17 rebounds.
• Noah Denz led all scorers with a game-high 24 points and team-high seven boards, while Devon Darrell led all Spartans with four assists.  

GAME NOTES

• Hilbert held a lopsided 62-26 advantage on the boards, including an impressive 25-5 advantage in offensive rebounds, which resulted in 20 second chance points and 54 points in the paint.
• D'Youville committed just 12 turnovers, while forcing 21 Hawks turnovers.
• The Hawks finished 32 of 74 (43.2%) from the floor, including 5 of 15 (33.3%) from 3-point range, while going 17 of 26 (65.4%) from the free throw line.   
• The Spartans shot 24 of 67 (35.8%) from the floor, including 8 of 32 from the 3-point line (25.0%), while shooting 16 of 20 (80.0%) from the charity stripe.  

WHAT'S NEXT

The Hilbert men's basketball team is back in action Saturday as they play host to Mount Aloysius in an AMCC contest with major playoff implications. Tip-off is set for 1pm.
