Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Rogers Comes Up Big In AMCC Loss

HAMBURG, N.Y.Shannon Rogers and Katelyn Proy propelled the Hilbert women's basketball team  with a combined 36 point and 35 rebound performance in their 50-49 AMCC loss to Medaille College tonight.

The Hawks (8-9, 4-6 AMCC) were better shooters, hitting 33.9% from inside the arc, but missed all six attempts from long distance while the Mavericks (2-14, 2-8 AMCC) couldn't buy a bucket all night long finishing with a 23.1 percent from the floor (3-10 beyond the arc).

Hilbert dominated the glass, out-rebounding the visitors 57-33 with 18 on the offensive end.  The Hawks had more defensive rebounds (39) than Medaille had collectively as a team because the Mav's shooting percentage was so low.

The style of defense changed from the first half to the second as the amount of contact permitted was tightened up.  In the first half, each team picked up a low number of fouls ~ Medaille whistled for seven and Hilbert had six fouls in 20 minutes of action.  But in the second half, play was slower and interrupted more often as each team committed almost double their first half number.

But the game came down to the final minutes of action and the foul line for Medaille.

Kelsi Ebert knotted the game at 46-46 with 1:31 remaining.  Medaille knocked down a jumper their next possession to take the lead, but a hard foul sent Ebert to the line for a bonus attempt when she drove the lane on the Hawks' next trip.  She split her makes resulting in a one-point difference in score.

Medaille missed their jumper in the paint and after Shannon Rogers grabbed her final rebound of the night she too was fouled hard.  Rogers found the bottom of the net twice to give Hilbert the 49-48 lead with 0:17 remaining.  Medaille's point guard went to the hole and sank a layup with 0:07 on the clock and Hilbert used their final timeout so they could advance the ball to half court.  Hilbert was unable to get a good look at the hoop so Medaille was able to hold on for the 50-49 road win.

The Mavs connected on 17 (of 22 shots) at the charity stripe while Hilbert hit only 11 (of 18 attempts).

Rogers led all scorers (19 points) and rebounders (21) and got a solid performance from her partner in the paint, Katelyn Proy who added 16 points and 14 rebounds (five blocks).    The rest of the Hawks were 5-of-28 from the floor.  Kelsi Ebert led with four assists and every single Hawk who played had at least two rebounds which helped on the boards.

Hilbert returns to action this weekend when they travel to Cresson, Pa for their rematch against Mount Aloysius College at 3pm January 23.
