Gormel Posts Nine Points in Hawks 1st Win of Season At Alfred

ALFRED, N.Y. – The Hilbert College women's lacrosse team was up for the challenge this afternoon when they traveled to Alfred University for a non-conference match on the windiest day of the year.

The Hawks came out on top with a 20-9 first-win of the season for the team and head coach Emily Pasternak.

Third-year Brooklynn Gormel posted nine points today fueled by seven goals and a pair of assists while freshman Josephine Ban added four markers and 10 draw controls.   Second-year Calista Mis also notched four points after scoring three goals.

Those three Hawks combined for a 7-13 free position conversion rate lifting Hilbert to 1-5 on the season.

Hilbert doubled-up the Saxons in shots (48-20) and 41-19 shots on goal.  The Royal and White attacked the cage all day which resulted in a game-high 15 free-position shots.

The Hawks defense caused 13 of Alfred's 31 turnovers.

Sophomore Ashley Repine collected another double figure saves game stopping 10 shots for her first win in the net this year.

The non-conference match was a tight game through the first 15-minutes of action.  After four different Hilbert players scored (Mis, Gormel, Ashley Binn, Ban), the Hawks and Saxons were knotted at 4-4.

Ban and  Gormel each netted two more times and Mis as well as Sam Lawicki helped the visitors extend their lead after a 6-0 run.  Alfred found the back of the net with 3:30 left in the first half but Gormel and Ban responded with two quick scores to extend their hold (12-5) by intermission.

AU tossed one past Repine at the start of the second period then suffered through another 4-0 run by the Hawks.  Mis (down) and Gormel (up) lifted Hilbert to a 16-7 score with about 15 minutes left in the game.

Gormel added two more hits before Victoria Santos (free position score) and Stephanie Cartonia each scored man-up goals in the last five minutes of the game.

Hilbert  returns to NEAC action this weekend for another home match on the road.  The Hawks will welcome Morrisville State to Eden High School as the second game of a NEAC double header April 7.  The men's team will play at 1pm and the women will follow with a 4pm face-off.
