Redhawks Stung By Yellow Jackets 3-1 In Season Opener

WAYNESBURG, Pa. – La Roche men's soccer opened the 2023 campaign with a road matchup against Waynesburg on Friday, but despite jumping ahead, fell to the Yellow Jackets 3-1.

It was a stalemate in the opening 45 minutes, as neither team could find the back the net going to the half scoreless.

In the first half, Waynesburg would lead the way with 11 shots, three of which were on target, while the Redhawks (0-1, 0-0 AMCC) had five shots and one on target.

Midway through the second half, La Roche would take the lead 1-0 at 61:14 when sophomore Samuel Mastroberardino scored unassisted.

Unfortunately for the Redhawks, the Yellow Jackets would score three goals in a 3:03 span from 78:05-81:08 to take the 3-1 lead and ultimately seal the contest.

The final shot total saw Waynesburg take 22 shots, with eight on target, while La Roche had nine shots and three on the frame.

Between the pipes, sophomore goalkeeper Kyle Rizzo made five saves on eight attempts.

It's a quick turnaround for the Redhawks as they return to the pitch at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sep. 2 when they host the home opener against Chatham at the Baierl Athletic Complex.
