THE BASICS
  • Final Score: Hilbert 90 Franciscan 84
  • Location: Hafner Recreation Center, Hilbert College 2pm
  • Records: Hilbert 11-5 (7-4 AMCC) | Franciscan 5-10 (4-6 AMCC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Franciscan opened the game with a John Noce three pointer, which Hilbert answered on the following possession with a Jon Evans jumper off a nice feed from Hunter Martineau.
  • After each team traded a pair of free throws, the Hawks turned to senior Alex Karamanos to fuel the offense. Karamanos scored the next five points for the Hawks to keep the deficit within three points.
  • The Barons looked to some hot shooting to build a 16-11 lead, but a Christian Przybyla three brought the Hawks within a basket of the Barons with just over 13 minutes to play in the opening half.
  • There was back and forth play over the next few possessions before Hunter Martineau stole a pass to spark a fast break, allowing Kyreese Fisher to finish at the rim. Fisher then hit from three on the following possession to shift the momentum to the royal and white, while taking a 25-20 lead with 10:08 remaining in the half.
  • Both teams shared baskets from three before Jon Evans finished down low with a thunderous two-handed slam to put the Hawks up 32-24.
  • After a three by the Barons John Noce cut the lead to five, Hilbert went on a 10-3 run sparked by a pair of Alex Karamanos field goals to put Hilbert up 42-30 with just under four minutes left on the clock.
  • Franciscan tried answering with a couple baskets, but Hilbert dominated the final two minutes of play, scoring eight unanswered points to go into the intermission with a 52-37 lead.
  • The Hawks continued their strong play out of the break, scoring the first six points of the second half to build a 58-37 lead, before Matt Trent nailed a three for the Barons.
  • After a pair of Barons field goals, the Hawks looked to Alex Karamanos for a pair of fast break layups to give the Hawks a 66-43 lead with 15:14 left in the game.
  • Franciscan wouldn't go away easy as they dominated the next four minutes of action, knocking down a pair of threes and having some nice takes to the rim, resulting in an 18-2 run to cut the deficit to 68-61 with 10:53 to play.
  • Hilbert answered back with Warren Richardson and Masia Phillips scoring the next 13 consecutive points for the royal and white to maintain a double digit lead with under four minutes left.
  • Matt Trent hit a three for the Barons with just under two minutes to play to cut the lead to seven, but it wasn't enough as seniors Masia Phillips and Hunter Martineau hit some key free throws down the stretch to seal the Hawks win.

  • The Hawks used 13 offensive rebounds and 18 fast break points to outscore the Barons 42-28 in the paint.
