Hawks Fall at Mt. Aloyisius, Phillips and Martineau Strike For 20 Points Each

CRESSON, Pa. - The Hilbert College men's basketball suffered their first loss in 2020 after they fell in defeat at Mount Aloysius  (91-76).

The Mounties built a double figure lead midway through the first half, withstood a fierce Hilbert rally when the Hawks sliced the margin to six points in the second half, then took over again to close the game with a 15-point victory.

HIGHLIGHTS

Masia Phillips and Hunter Martineau both knocked in 20 points to lead the Hawks from the floor.  They combined for a 50-percent field goal effort (14-of-28) and went 10-for-11 at the foul line.  Jon Evans pulled down 10 rebounds and added 12 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Mt. Aloysius started the game on a roll, posting points in only combinations of threes early in the contest.
  • Martineau knotted the game at 9-9 before the Mounties connected again from downtown.
  • That hit led to an 18-7 run which set a double-digit margin by the 10-minute mark.
  • Phillips' short jumper at 7:48 made it a nine point difference (23-32) but Mt. Aloysius reached again from deep stretching their lead back to double figures.
  • The hosts held a 51-36 advantage at intermission thanks to their 10-of-18 performance beyond the arc.
  • The pace of the game in the second half mirrored the opening session.
  • Both teams switched up their defensive schemes as the game progressed but the score differential remained the same in the first five minutes.
  • Trailing by 15-points, the Hawks applied full court pressure and Phillips 5-point spurt brought Hilbert within ten points (51-61).
  • Kyreese Fischer pulled Hilbert within eight (53-61) at 13:54, then both teams went cold from the floor for almost three minutes.
  • Evans scored in the paint powering the Hawks back in the game (55-61) but  the Mounties drilled back-to-back 3's combined with an old fashioned 3-point play which set the tone the rest of the way.

GAME NOTES
  • Hilbert shot 44.8-percent from the field (26-of-65) and made only five of the 18 3-point attempts (27.8%).
  • Mt. Aloysius shot 55.4-percent from the floor (31-of-56) and really made their mark from beyond the arc, hitting 15-of-27 3-point shots.
  • Carlos Palacio led the Mounties with 24 points, hitting 4-of-7 from the arc, pulled down 10 rebounds, was credited with three assists and five blocked shots.
