Women's Basketball's Slow First Half Caused Too Much Damage

PITTSBURGH, Pa – As hard as they tried, the Hilbert women's basketball team had too large of a first half deficit to overcome. They slipped to 2-2 overall after their 69-49 defeat at Chatham University this afternoon.

Shannon Rogers scored 13 points as the only Hawk to hit double-digits.  She also grabbed 10 rebounds to continue her season-long string of double-double average through four games (15 pts/14 rebs).  Katelyn Proy dominated the glass pulling in 18 rebounds as the visitors won the battle of the boards (45-38).

Kelsi Ebert was credited with five assists, added six points and five rebounds while Lindsay O'Neil shot 75% from the foul line to score nine points for the Hawks.
Hilbert found themselves down by only five points (13-8) at the end of the first quarter but they struggled offensively in the second period and were outscored 16-4 to go to half time down 29-12.

The Hawks shot 23% from the field and only took 26 shots because they gave up 15 possessions in turnovers.  Chatham wasn't that much better (hitting only 10 of 35 shots), but they struck from long distance earning extra points from their five 3-pointers.

Things clicked for Hilbert in the second half as they strung together 22 and 15 points quarters.  They shot 45.8% from the field and went to the foul line 19 times, sinking 14.  The Hawks took care of the ball and limited their second half turnovers to 10.

But they didn't have enough time to pull the victory out this afternoon.

Hilbert returns for their final bus trip in November when they travel to Elmira College with the men's team.  The women open the double header at 5pm and the men will follow at 7pm before the Thanksgiving break.
