Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Alvarez Was Unstoppable From Deep In Hilbert's Buffalo Cup Win

HAMBURG, N.Y. – Freshman Antonio Alvarez shot the Hilbert College men's basketball team to a 100-75 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference victory over D'Youville College tonight.

The #4 Hawks (10-5) continue their fight towards the finish hoping to hosts a First Round play-off game in two weeks as either the 3rd of 4th seed.  The Spartans dropped to 2-13 in the league and 5-16 overall.

Alvarez led all scorers with 34 points (25 minutes) and set a new single-game record with 10 made 3-pointers, fueled by a 12-of-13 performance from the field.  The only miss the rookie was credited for was his final shot of the evening at 11:45 in the second half.

Hilbert closed the evening hitting 52.9 percent from the floor and 61.9 percent from downtown.  Tyler Aquilina hit Hilbert's two other deep shots as the Hawks went 13-of-21 from beyond the arc.

Even with their strong offensive shooting performance, Hilbert finished with 10 offensive rebounds, converting those boards into seven more points.

Masia Phillips produced good minutes, posting his first career double-double by pairing 23 points with 10 rebounds.  He went 5-for-7 at the foul line and added three assists in 26 minutes.

Hunter Martineau doubled his assist average, thanks to his team's strong shooting tonight.  The sophomore point guard collected 11 assists with the team finishing with 22 assists on their 36 buckets.

All 13 healthy Hawks saw court-time tonight with 12 players lighting up the stat sheet.

Two seniors, Jonathan Jackson and Ben Bolden-McMillian combined for a 5-of-7 shooting night with Jackson scoring six points and McMillian hitting two of his three shots (4 points) from the floor.

D'Youville's largest lead in the game was right off the tip when the Spartans knocked down a three-pointer at 19:54.  The Hawks started the game playing 90 feet of basketball and forced D'Youville into early turnovers or rushed shots.

Joseph Braniecki scored in the paint and Martineau knocked down a three that started the Hilbert run.  Back-to-back deep shots by Alvarez lifted the Hawks into a double-digit lead, which they never relinquished the rest of the night.

By intermission, Alvarez had already hit seven shots beyond the arc (25 points), Phillips chipped in 12 points (5-of-8) and the Hawks tallied 14 assists on 20 baskets.

Hilbert held a 30-point lead much of the second half before they settled in for the 25-point victory.

The men's basketball swept D'Youville in Buffalo Cup points this winter adding three points to the department's 11 points this year.

The Hawks now focus their sights on their final home game of the season this weekend.  Hilbert will host Pitt-Greensburg in a 1pm game February 10.  The men's basketball team will also honor their three seniors – David Arlaud, Jonathan Jackson and Ben Bolden-McMillian prior to the normal pre-game introductions.

Hilbert then closes their regular season at #2 Penn State Behrend (Feb 14) and #6 Mt. Aloysius (Feb 17).

The Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play-offs begin Feb 21 and conclude on Feb 25 when the AMCC Champion is crowned.
