HAMBURG, N.Y. - Hilbert College hosted #10 Vassar tonight in an 8pm contest and the Hawks' were up for the challenge. Vassar, though, was eager to pick up their second win of the night after they claimed a 3-set victory over D'Youville College in the 6pm game.
The visiting Brewers closed their night with another straight-set win to improve to 18-5 on the season.
Vassar finished the match hitting .333 percent (33 kills/11 errors) while the Hawks struggled against the taller and athletic front line to finish in the negative (-.022).
Tyler Sieczkarek and
Korey Schwab led the attack with five and four kills, respectively.
Adam Heftka earned 12 assists on the Hawks' 16 kills and
Trevor Gabamonte picked up nine digs.
Korey Schwab chipped in seven digs as did
Ryan Schwab with five.
Brett Kane earned both of Hilbert's service aces.
Hilbert (9-11) was whistled for four blocking errors and gave up 10 points on reception errors.
Vassar started fast in the first set and Hilbert was slow to pick up the pace. The Hawks did rally and got back in the game before the Brewers scored consecutive service aces and hard kills straight to the floor to win 25-14.
After digging themselves into a big hole (14-3) Hilbert regained the momentum and rallied to a 25-20 second set loss. A combination of Vassar getting out of sync and Hilbert deciding to attack led to the late-game rally.
And in the final set, Vassar used consistent hitting (15 kills, 2 errors in 24 attempts) to claim the final set/match 25-11.
Hilbert returns to action tomorrow when they travel to Erie, Pa to face AMCC foe Penn State Behrend at 2pm, then face Siena Heights right after at 4pm. Fans can catch the action via

And everyone is invited to return to the Hafner Center on Monday, March 21 to cheer your Hawks on against Loras College (IA) at 7pm.
