A Pair Of Home Runs Push Hawks to 10-8 Win

FT. PIERCE, Fla – Playing in their first double-digit scoring game of the 2016 season, the Hilbert College baseball team out-hit Delaware Valley this morning to improve to 2-1 after the 10-8 win.

Both Anthony De La Cruz and Joshua Maier knocked one out of the ball park to lift the Hawks to victory.  De La Cruz hit his 2RBI in the second inning to forge a 2-2 tie while Maier hit a 3-run homer to give the Hawks a 10-3 cushion in the top of the 8th.

Del Val strung together five runs in the bottom half of the eighth and made things interesting heading into the 9th.

Insert Andrew Cartaginese on the mound.

The Aggies got their first batter on base with a single up the middle.  The Hawks forced that player out at second on a fielder choice with the second batter and they got out of the inning with a double play between Maier, Taylor Haug and Kevin Moore to win the game.

Moore went 4 for 5 (with a pair of doubles) and Haug went 2 for 4 as each finished with an RBI and a run.

Sal Carroccia picked-up his first win after throwing 6.2 innings.   The junior struck seven out, gave up seven hits and walked three.  Michael Goodberry and Winfred Nelson saw time on the mound and shared the Delaware Valley five-run inning.  Cartaginese faced three batters to get the save.

After Anthony Wurstner trotted home with De La Cruz in the second inning, the score remained 2-2 through the next six outs.

Haug started things off in the top of the 4th with a single to left side.  He moved one base off a wild pitch and advanced to third after Wurstner reached on a throwing error.  With De La Cruz at the plate, the Delaware Valley pitcher got nervous and his wild pitch allowed Haug time to score the go-ahead run.

Nothing happened with scoring until the top of 7th when the Hawks tacked on four runs.

Eric Flores hit a sac fly to center field giving De La Cruz time to sprint home before the throw.  With runners on second and first, Moore hit a single to center field and advanced to second on fielding error.  That mishandling of the ball was long enough time for Maier and Bonafede to run home.  Haug then hit a single to center field as Moore wheeled his way from the opposite corner and made it home to build a 7-2 lead.
