Phillips/Arlaud Lead the Hawks In A 3-Point Win Against Alfred

HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Hilbert College men's basketball team outlasted Alfred University's second-half rally and held on for the 85-82 non-conference win this afternoon in the Hafner Recreation Center.

Masia Phillips and David Arlaud each shot 60% from the floor to lead Hilbert to their second victory of the season.

Phillips made three of his five shots from beyond the 3-point line putting together and 18-point performance in 22-minutes of action.  Arlaud matched the offensive effort going 6-of-8 from the foul line, while adding a pair of assists.

Hunter Martineau put it all together again today earning game-high honors in rebounds (8) and assists (4) while chipping in 14 points.  Joseph Braniecki and Jalen Smith posted 12 points each with Smith credited with three assists and Braniecki tagged with three blocked shots.

Both teams traded bucket in the early part of the first half, until Hilbert took the lead in the 16th minute then held onto it till intermission.  Alfred forced a 21-21 score at 11:21, but the Hawks were able to keep it a 2-possession game until Braniecki's bucket at 2:29 lifted Hilbert to double figures (43-32).

David Arlaud opened the second half with a lay-up and stretched Hilbert's lead to 15 points less than one-minute into the final session.

Alfred slowly chipped away at the score but Hilbert kept their double digit lead for seven minutes. The Saxon's strung together seven straight points and cut the difference to 61-56.

Arlaud and Phillips combined for a 5-point run padding the difference back to 10 points, but Alfred did not go away.

Alfred knotted the game at 80-80 with 3:46 to go but four straight free throws by Martineau and Arlaud gave Hilbert an 84-80 lead.  Phillips went 1-for-2 from the charity stripe setting an 85-82 mark and the Saxon's final 3-point attempt fell short at the buzzer.

The Hawks found their old shooting form and finished with an impressive 53.1% from the floor, although they only made 4-of-14 from deep.   Hilbert won the battle of the boards (38-26) and earned 18 offensive boards, led by Antonio Alvarez  five.

The 2-2 Hawks return to action mid-week when they open-up league play with an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) 6pm game at Pitt-Bradford November 29.
