Martineau Almost Did It Again As Men's Basketball Battles Back For OT Win

ELMIRA, N.Y. - Hunter Martineau was the driving force behind Hilbert College's 85-77 comeback, overtime win against Elmira College this afternoon.

The senior point guard was one-rebound shy of earning another triple double this season after scoring a career-high 32 points, distributing a game-high 11 assists and pulling down a game-high nine rebounds.

Ant Moynihan lifted Hilbert late in regulation and again in overtime to finish with season-high 15 points as the Hawks improve to 6-1 on the season.

THE BASICS
⦁    Final Score: Hilbert 85 Elmira 77, OT
⦁    Location:  Speidel Gym, Elmira College, 4:00 pm
⦁    Records: Hilbert College 6-1 (2-0 AMCC) Emira 0-6  (0-0 Empire 8)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Hilbert jumped out to an early lead in what turned out to be a very evenly played opening ten minutes of action. Alex Karamanos put six points on the score board before Elmira created enough space, fueled by back-to-back 3-point shots, to build a two possession game
  • Ryan Hogan's dunk at 11:42 shortened the margin to three points and Karamanos' layup at 7:46 evened the score at 19-19.  Martineau gave the Hawks their final lead (23-22) in the first half at 4:35 with a bucket in the paint.
  • Elmira closed the opening period draining four 3-point shots building a 36-27 lead by the break.
  • The Hawks scored on their first possession and then Martineau  stole the ball from behind in transition, but for the next four minutes Hilbert struggled on offense and didn't make any stops on defense.
  • Warren Richardson broke the drought and Martineau came up with another steal in full court pressure which Lazar Jovanovich finished; Hogan earned back-to-back assists on those scores.
  • Martineau then went 4-for-4 from the foul line and sliced the margin to under ten for the first time in the second half (45-37).
  • The Soaring Eagles extended their lead back to 13 points but Hilbert slowly chipped away and battled back to a 59-55 game with over six minutes to go.
  • It stayed a four-point game until Jovanovich sank one of two free throws creating a one possession game.  The Hawks drew an offensive foul on their next trip down on defense and Martineau tickled the bottom of the twine to pull Hilbert within one (64-63).
  • Elmira converted twice from the charity stripe and once in the paint stretching the difference back to five points but after that, Hilbert exploded for multiple offensive rebounds and finished their next possession with a triple, deep along the left baseline by Ant Moynihan with 1:21 (68-66).
  • Elmira missed a pair of freebies, Martineau grabbed a defensive rebound, and fed Jovanovich who knotted the game 68-68.
  • The Hawks were whistled for a blocking foul in the paint which led to Elmira going back up by two points with 0:34 seconds.
  • Moynihan was fouled on penetration and, for the second time in the second half, knotted the game (70-70) after putting both free throws in..
  • Elmira held the ball for last shot and their 3-point attempt fell well short of anything.
OVER TIME
  • The hosts earned, what would be, their final advantage in the game with a jumper as the 30-second shot clock was winding down.
  • Karamonos, knowing how to move without the ball, took a Martineau dump to the rim on Hilbert's next  possession and witnessed Martineau grab a rebound and go coast-to-coast for an uncontested lay-in at 3:36.
  • Elmira was lucky to finish their next offensive attack after they picked up a loose ball off a broken play, and scored creating the games 6th and final tie, 74-74.
  • The Hawks picked up five points in 22 seconds, two from the charity stripe and another hit from downtown by Moynihan with  2:29 to go.
  • The Soaring Eagles had one last 3-pointer in the arsenal but Jon Evans soft touch in the paint and Martineau's effort on defense at the other end (stolen cross court pass) created enough breathing room for the Hawks down the stretch.
NOTES
  • Hilbert extended their win-streak to four against Elmira.
  • The Hawks established a new season-low of eight turnovers (45 minutes) this season.
  • Martineau sank 10-of-12 from the floor, 12-of-13 at the foul line, dished for his second double-digit assist game (11) and led with nine rebounds in 37 minutes.  His 11 assists led to 24 additional Hilbert points.
    • He scored 26 points, dished for 10 assists and earned five rebounds the game's final 25 minutes.
  • Ant Moynihan scored 15 points and Lazar Jovanovich added 14, hitting 6-of-8 from the floor.
  • Alex Karamanos chipped in 12 points shooting 50-percent from the field.  Ryan Hogan led the Hawks with four offensive rebounds and dished four assists.
  • The winless Soaring Eagles had five players post double figure scoring led by Rashaad Nurse' 16 points.
  • Hilbert relied on their strong shooting percentages, hitting 33-of-66 from the field and 15-of-17 at the foul line.  Even with shooting so well on offense, the Hawks still managed to earn 10 offensive rebounds.
  • Elmira also shot well, knocking down 28-of-58 attempts but went 10-for-15 at the charity stripe.  The Soaring Eagles did out rebound the Hawks (32-28) and also worked for 12 offensive rebounds.
