Pitching Masterclass from Koagel, Krieman Leads Express to Season-Opening Sweep

The Wells College Express steamrolled their way to a season-opening sweep of the York College Cardinals in Saturday's early-morning action. Powerful pitching performances from first year phenoms Christa Koagel and Josie Krieman propelled the Express to a couple 5-inning routs as the ladies took two straight over York by scores of 18-1 and 15-0 respectively.

Koagel toed the rubber in the first matchup, going the distance and striking out an extraordinary 12 Cardinal batters. Koagel also recorded her 15 total outs while only facing 17 batters, sitting down all but 2 York batters over the course of the 5-inning contest. In total, the talented first year from Parish, NY pitched every inning of the first matchup, only allowing 2 hits and 1 run to go along with her 12 strikeouts. She picked up the win and the Express cruised to an 18-1 victory in the stormy morning conditions.

In game 2, Krieman picked right up from where Koagel left off.

Krieman also went the distance in her matchup, striking out 11 Cardinals and sitting down all but 1 batter that she faced. The Raleigh, NC native allowed only a singular hit during game 2, and completed the 5-inning shutout as the Express carried their massive momentum to a 15-0 win, boosting their record to 2-0 after their big opening weekend.

The best part about Koagel and Krieman's games is that they did much more than just pitch.

The two first years also got it done at the plate, with both putting up excellent hitting days in addition to their shutout pitching. In 2 games played, Koagel went 2-for-5 with 4 RBI and 6 runs scored, and Krieman went 3-for-7 with 3 RBI and 7 runs scored.

Also stuffing the book for the Express was standout Sophomore Bailey Friot, who was on fire during the 2-game series, recording a monster line by going 4-for-4 with 8 RBI and 2 runs scored.

Sophomore Morgan Brown also got it done at the plate, going 3-for-4 with 1 RBI and 1 run scored.

The Express outscored the Cardinals 28-1 in Saturday's action. They travel to Rosemont for an exhibition on Monday, their last action before spring break. They officially take the field next on Saturday, March 23rd when they take on SUNY Canton in their home opener at the Wells College Turf Complex.
