AMCC ANNOUNCES 2014-15 COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARDS

The AMCC is proud to recognize our student-athletes for the many hours of community service they dedicate to giving back to their campuses and local communities.  Below are the 2015 AMCC community service award winners for the categories of One Time Event, Ongoing Event, and Array of Events.

One Time Event

Bronze:  La Roche College baseball team, who assisted the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank with collecting, organizing and assembling food boxes for distribution.

Silver:  Mount Aloysius College women’s basketball team, who participated in the Mountain Lion backpack program which provides food for weekend meals for approximately 600 elementary school students in the Altoona area who might otherwise go hungry.

Gold:  Pitt-Greensburg SOPA (Special Olympics of PA) Hoops Saturday. This event involved 80 volunteers led by the UPG SAAC and the men’s and women’s basketball teams. The Bobcats held an all-day event for Special Olympians in Westmoreland County, raising more than $1,000, and earning them an additional $500 grant from the NCAA to continue their efforts.

Ongoing Event

Bronze:  Medaille College men’s and women’s cross country teams lent their support to the National Federation for Just Communities, participating in the Dash for Diversity, a fundraising event to help them in their mission to stop racism, bias and discrimination.

Bronze: La Roche College student-athletes participated in “End the Word,” a department-wide effort to stop using the “N” word. This initiative was conducted by the men’s basketball team and SAAC during Black History Month, resulting in participation by 250 people signing the pledge to end use of the word.

Silver:  Penn St. Altoona and the Special Olympics have had a partnership in place since 2012. The student-athletes completed 24 events with 119 volunteers this year.

Gold:  Pitt-Bradford male student-athletes chose to “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes,” an international men’s march to promote awareness about sexual violence and domestic abuse against women, where they literally walk a mile in women’s high heels.

Array of Events

Bronze:  The Pitt-Bradford (multiple teams) Panthers organized several events that included helping at a bowling fundraiser for Big Brothers/Big Sisters, serving at a Veteran’s Day breakfast, and hosting a Dig Pink game to raise money for breast cancer research.

Silver:  Franciscan University Men’s Basketball team participated in a series of basketball games against local prison inmates. The Barons were the first to initiate the friendly competition, and were then invited back because the interaction was so positive from the perspective of the individuals who were incarcerated.

Gold:  The Hilbert Women’s Soccer Team organized a multitude of activities, including dedicating a game to spread the message on an anti-bullying campaign, participating in a walk to raise awareness about suicide prevention, and hosting a special Olympian as a Hawk for a Day.
